What resolution do you play with. I started out with 1900 by 1200 widescreen and noticed that my FRAPS fps was 25 to 30 most of the time. It was ok.

Then I decreased to 1600 by 1200 and the fps is great 45 plus. Looks are a bit comprimised.

I have everything maxed to the max and 4X AA

I have 2 gig ram, 7200 hd, and 7900 go video card. merom 2 gig hz

so what is your preference and set up? thanks in advance.

    the old man.

Jeez, seriously? I would have thought that a Merom + 7900GS would be more than enough to handle Oblivion; hell, I've heard people doing OK with Oblivion on X1600's and GeForce 7600's.

Do you just mean it was too slow with all settings set to high and running at 1900x1200? Did you have any luck after turning off some details or lowering settings any?

Well you must not run Oblivion at native resolution. 1440*900 with HDR and medium settings should run great. Not 1920*1200 with HDR and highest settings, no notebook-videocard can handle that. Not even a 7900GTX.

Dude, lower the res a bit.

I can handle Oblivion with High Textures, 2xAA, and some sliders tuned at 23-45fps..

What sound card does the S96J have? The best description I can find is "3D Premium Surround Sound Onboard" which could mean just about anything.

Yeah, that's why you're better off than ucdoc. If only Dell was smart enough to put a decent audio chip on their boards. The Sigmatel audio in Dell laptops only offers two simultaneous channels which just destroys performance in Oblivion. On the other hand, I've never seen it affect performance anywhere except in Oblivion. I see from the Realtek website that they offer 2, 6, and 8 channel version of the AC'97 and 2 and 8 channel versions of the HD Codec. [ source] Do you happen to know how many the Asus has?

What I want to know is how bad does it look when you play games in a lower resolution? How many of you play games outside of the native resolution on your notebooks?

My specific issue is I am looking into getting a 1705. The screen options are WUXGA and WXGA. I play a lot of games and I know for a fact that I won't be able to run all my games at the native resolution on the WUXGA display now and in the future as games demmand better hardware I will have to lower it even more to get decent performance. On the WXGA I may not have to run outside the native resolution so that is a big plus. I hear reports of the WXGA monitors from dell having massive light leak problems (they all do, but the WXGA is more likely to be worse).

    So my questions are.

Do any of you guys and gals play games outside the native resolution? How does it look?

Those of you with a dell 1705 with WXGA screen are you happy with it, or are the viewing angles very limited?

If you prefer one screen over the other have you actually compared both back to back, are you just guessing that whatever you paid for looks better than what you did not pay for?

Well, sometimes things look a little "blurrier" (or less crisp at least) at non-native resolutions, but once you get into actual game playing it doesn't make that much of a difference. A game like BF2, for example, ends up looking very good even if your LCD is at a non-native resolution.

That being said, the UWXGA E1705 can run BF2 at native resolution, anyway.

But it's still true: I don't even run Windows at 1920x1200. Even at 1440x900 it looks great. Get the bigger screen if only because it's glossy. Games always look better on glossy screens.
