desktop gfx vs laptop gfx

As titled:

simply out of curiousity, i was wondering what's the difference between say a geforce go 7600gt vs geforce 7600gt? or say an ATI mobility x1600 vs ATI x1600?

X1600 versus x1600.

 

just off the top of my head, clock dramatically lower than the desktop version. less pixel shader power and less transistors for head and battery issues. that is for the MR x1900 that is. im not sure about the mid range cards

 

Well, lowering the clocks and decreasing the number of pipelines is the easiest way to lower the power consumption.

 

mobility x1600 and desktop x1600 has the same amount of pipelines. The go7600 (not the gt version or 7700) on the other hand has a reduced amount of pipelines.

 

but u figure the higher clock speed in the desktop version of the x1600 would make a difference right? and the dedicated 512MB of Vram would make somewhat of a difference. right?

 

neither x1600 or 7600 can properly use 512 mb vram (even desktop ones) with the possible exception of 7600gt/x1650xt, but i doubt that. The higher clocks and better cooling (for OCing) makes a difference, yes

 

The desktop X1600 is considered a terrible card, literally 50% as powerful as the 7600GT, where as the Go7600 and Mobility X1600 are more or less the same.

 

it depends on which x1600 your talking about. the original ones, x1600xt and pro, were not as good as their nVidia counterparts, but the x1650xt is the equivalent of the 7600gt, and the x1650pro is as fast as the x1600xt but with larger OC headroom.

 

Yes but talking about the main X1600 cards. The X1650XT came out later, and at a time when people had either already bought a cheaper 7600gt or gone higher to the affordable 7900gs and x1950.

The X16xx line was like Nvidias FX line - they brought out the decent cards far too late to save the rep.

 

well, technichally, they were out for a few months before nVidia released geforce 7600gt, but they didn't impress that much even in the beginning. The x1600xt debuted at a price close to the 6800gt, with performance between 6800gs and 6600gt.

 

But that's the whole point - the X1600 came about the same time, yet it was annihilated totally by the 7600GT. An X1600Pro is even worse then a 7600GS, let alone GT. The X1650XT as you say is a good card but it came far later, and too late to really save the lines reputation...

The X1600 and X1650Pro were never considered good value for money, although they are slightly now because they're so dirt cheap, but at first the price did not reflect the sub par performance.
