Necromancer and his horde of skeletons...

I found the Barbarian and the Amazon to be the least useful...

Check it out...notebookreview.com hyperlinked my reply to amazon.com...aaaah...the revenue that inadvertent clicks must bring to amazon.com and then they are gracious enough to share with notebookreview.com... "I was looking for info on Diablo 2, and there was this inexplicable lure to amazon.com, and then I found myself buying a Kindle..."

    LOL.

When I was in line the other day to purchase a copy of The Sims 3 a dude in front of me bought Diablo 2. People must be getting amped for D3. I may just blow the dust off my D2 and give it a whirl again.

    And yes, Necro ftw.

See, a well-built bowazon can be very nasty... maxed out guided arrow FTW. Also my Werewolf Druid tore up.

The druid in either werewolf or "werebear" form, or a necromancer.

Really? I loved the Barbarian. It's just that you have to play the game completely differently with each character type. You just can't use the same tactics with the Necromancer or Sorceress as you would with the Barbarian.... the barb's a tank. You use your skills to weaken the enemies, to scare them, then go in and smash heads in. And use Leap to get out if the going gets tough ;) The Necromancer, you creep ahead bits at a time, trying to draw off their minions with your minions, and keep buffing yours with various spells and so on. Just different play styles.

Zeal paladin is the best char in the game hands down.

Any caster has something in the game that's immune to it.

With the right gear, and life leech you'll be unstoppable.

My geared out paladin could easily Solo Hell Baal with 8 other people in the game, could solo uber Diablo, could solo Uber diablo/uber meph/uber baal (torch portal). Had a ton of health, armor, and damage.

    berserker barbarian
max out berserk and it's synergies, get all the health you can and you're good to go. your main attack is magical, secondary is physical, so you only have like 2 monsters you can't kill in the whole game.

check out the various guides first. The www.battle.net Skills forums for D2, there's a character build collection there. The official Blizzard strategy guide www.battle.net/diablo2exp, diabloii.net, and gamefaqs.com as well.

I recommend that for the first play through, go through SP. You'll learn the basic mechanics and storyline better. Most people online are like robots and won't tolerate much from new players. And for the time being, ignore all the solo this and solo that, and the annhilius and the Torches. Learn the mechanics and game first :)

Don't forget to download the latest patch. It's 1.13, I think.

I won't say what character is best, since that's largely varying from person to person. But a character easier for the beginner would be a zeal paladin (zealot) a fury druid (w/ Oak Sage instead of HoW for a lot of life) or a Chain lightning/Lightning Soceress. Assassins that use traps (Trapassins) or, in general, most ranged characters are suitable for beginners as you won't get into trouble much.

Nercromancers take a bit to use effectively.

    Have fun :D

All of the classes are fun in their own way. If this really is your first time with Diablo 2, just go with your gut and enjoy.

Although the sorceress is a bit more difficult to play at the beginning.

Last time I played on the west servers, it was really laggy due to high latency/ping. (many of the server were rumored to be moved to support WOW). It makes sense since this game is pretty old, at least 8 years from what I remembered.

edit: type "/fps" in chat to see your fps and pings

800x600 is the highest resolution. And be thankful for that, because it was originally 640x480, until the expansion came out and bumped it up.

I'm not much of a Tank player...I finished Diablo 2 with a Necromancer, Sorceress, Amazon and Barbarian (never played a Paladin)...

Just didn't have as much fun with the Barbarian...and I found myself heavily reliant on armor and weapons...same with the Amazon and I imagine the Paladin...

I felt that the Sorceress and Necromancer were easier for me to play naked...not as much frustration getting back to my stuff...

But other than the jungle level (blech), I thought the game was fun regardless of character class, and I never played multiplayer so I'm not sure if a Necromancer would translate well to the multiplayer game...

Interestingly, my first character on WoW was an Elven Warrior that I took to Level 24, and the class forever turned me off to WoW...after getting dual wield, there was never another skill/buff/whatever that interested me with the character...maybe I needed to play long enough to get a mount...

Hammerdins are good for beginners, they'll kill most things without a problem, and are good at clearing large mobs.

I don't remember the exact skill build of my zealot (been a few years), but it was something like:

max zeal, max fanticism(probly spelled it wrong, the high level melee aura), and then maxed the synergies to both of those, and put everything else into holy shield.

My gear: Eth Death(runeword) berserker axe, crafted vamp gloves (with 20increased attack speed among many other stats), eth exile(runeword) shield, angelic amulet, angelic rune, frost raven ring, eth upgraded shaftstop (zod'd), Crown of the Ages (2x 40 increased damage/15 increased attack speed jewels), nosferatus belt, upgraded gorefoot boots... I won't get into the charms and such.

best way to make money is build a magic find sorc first. Magic find items are very cheap and will obviously help you find better items faster. Around 600 MF is a good number to start with. Many people do mephisto or pickett runs to obtain high level items. Frozen orb sorcs are usually the best to use to hunt down items, but lightning sorcs have the best survival, and fire sorcs do the most damage to single sources. I've made over 10 sorcs to level 80+.

600MF? Cmon now think of how hard that would be on his FIRST char. I mean, I dont really remember much but lets say he used full Tals, that would give him what like 350MF? Then the two rings MF rings 60% max? MF small charms are rare so maybe like 10% there if hes lucky. Maybe some 40% wartravs, and something 30% chancies? So like, 490%, with perfect ( nagels? ) and FULL Tals, ALL of which would be rough to get. And with that his FCR would be pretty low too. He doesnt have the equips yet to balance out his MF/FCR/KS

I second the frozen orb sorc, but personally, I always liked the Javazon for cow runs. Something about furying mass cows and destroying them all was just......idk

hmm...I guess you're right. I shouldn't expect him to use a 6 IST dimensional blade right off the bat... but MF charms were a dime a dozen when I quit back in 2006, so they should be even cheaper now.
There's also a unique mf charm that's really cheap, since you can only carry one at a time that adds like 50 or so MF. I gave like 10 of them away when I played because I didn't have a use for more than a few.

    SKIP! NEXT!

Complete and utter noob? Then, I say, play a Barb or a Zeal Pally. They're utter poo at higher difficulties, but they're possibly the most fun for beginners.

    That's not true at all.

Zeal paladins and Barbs are 2 of the most powerful classes at the highest levels, But they are gear dependent.

Casters can only become so strong even with the best gear, and at a certain point better gear and higher levels won't make them much better. Casters are also the easiest to learn with.

Hmmmm. Perhaps times have changed since I played D2. Unlike, it seems, many other people, I quit D2 a year or two after it was released.

... aaaaand then half a decade later, I walk into cybercafes and find myself surprised to find people still wailing away at Mephisto...

If you quit before the patch that released the "uber" runewords, then you missed out on a lot.
enigma-armor that lets anyone teleport (makes ww barbs godly)
heart of the oak - insane caster weapon
breath of the dying - one of the best melee weapons in the game (60ias and over 400ed)
    chaos-gives assassins ww
I could list many others, but those were the most profound.

Oh wow...you stopped playing before I even started playing, lmao.

Certain weapons/armor come with empty slots. You can put jewels, gems, or Runes(little stones with inscriptions on them) in the slots. Certain combinations of rune words "spell" unique items that give the item new properties and insane mods. There are like 30 different runes, and they range in price from throwaway to super expensive (relatively).

Sort of. Each rune has a special ability it grants, like + strenth, or + health, or mana and so on.

However, if you combine a group of runes in a single item you'll create a "runeword" that instead of having just a couple +stats/abilities it can like up to 10 different mods. Some are ridiculously powerful.

Level 80 is a decent level to start finding things... ah there's the tricky part. You either need to have 2 accounts open at the same time, or find a buddy that will open a private game for you and let you drop your gear in game so you can transfer your items.

Not sure if it's borderline taboo to speak of it here, but... ;p You can install D2 on 2 computers, host a TCP/IP game on one and join it with the other, and transfer your items that way.

You -are- running two copies of a game you bought only once, but... just to transfer items? -ponder-

    EDIT:

Pssshhttt, speaking of running two copies of a game you only buy once... I'm a' hankerin' after some D2 action right now, but I don't have my CDs anymore. So it looks like I'm gonna go hunting for a games store that's still open at... 9:05 PM. Hmmmmmmm.

This all seems very difficult to do and I think I missed the time when this game was at it's peak. I really don't have any friends that play diablo 2 and i don't have 2 battlenet accounts :(
I'm thinking about playing singleplayer, becuase then I could just play it however i wanted to or hacking my account to get wealth and items....
whats the difference between ladder and open battle.net? I heard that you can't hack your account if your characters are in ladder but you can hack the ones in singleplayer or open?

I heard they might reset the ladder soon so whats the pint of playing on ladder now if they reset it and i lose all my progress?

    lol

Geeze, I didn't think they were ever going to reset ladder again, but who knows.

You can hack in open/single player. Ladder and non-ladder you can't hack in. You can get better items that are Ladder only in ladder, thus making ladder better. Hitting level 80 doesn't take that long. For an average player probably a week, I could do it in 5 hours.

    ... from scratch?

    Tips, please!

I'm about to start playing D2 again with a bunch of old friends. Heh. To think that we were so young, back then. Hell, we were barely teenagers.

EDIT: Oh, yeah, and you won't be able to run 2 copies of the same game if you're playing on BNet. Mmmmmm. Are there different BNet servers? Not sure which one I'd be playing on. For some reason all the people who play DotA here do it on North American servers. -shrug-

Yea, from scratch, but you have to have at least one good sorc/hammerdin friend.

There are two forms of rushing. There's the standard rush which includes:
Your friend killing andy for you, then doing the stupid act 2 quests for you, then killing meph and diablo for you, and then baaling you up to a certain level, and then you repeat in nightmare and hell... this takes about a good 8-12 hours.

The second way is to do the first few steps, but have them go fight baal, and teleport you in right before he dies so you get credit for killing him. repeat in nightmare. Then have them rush you to hell Diablo, and have them kill all the enemies in the circle area before diablo, and diablo as well. Repeat the last step until level 50 or 60 I believe, and then do baal runs. This can take from 5-8 hours, depending on how competent your rusher is and how few times you die.

Sadly I won't be joining you guys for d2... All my chars are long expired, I don't have the CDs with me, and my internet is shotty at best.
