Say games like Tf2/warcraft or street fighter 4. Do they take up alot of bandwith playing online? I'm on a capped ISP plan so i need to make sure i dont overdo it.

Are you on a GB per month plan or a Speed limited plan? I doubt they use more than 200kB/s up and down at the same time, but all that data does eventually add up over the course of a month, no matter how small it is.
-
Games on the whole don't use up that much bandwidth but it does add up, for example if you're a hardcore WoW fanatic, you shouldn't get through many gigabytes though provided you're not nerdy enough to be able to read 1337 speak without even slowing a little.
It enfuriates me when people say that they need a high speed connection to game, most of the time the data rates are fine. What really matters in online gaming is your ping. -
i DL at 120kb/s max currently with my failnet and upload is so poor i daren't mention it, yet i play Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 fine (until the internet switches off completely, but until then it is ok)

My first experience with broadband at home was on a 1 MBit connection that maxed out at typically 70 kb/s download. Everything ran perfect. Like Funky Monk mentioned, it's all about the ping as long as your connection is decent.

While you should not run into cap issues, if you have a cap you really should examine the alternatives.
-
My cap is 60g/month on a Canadian ISP plan with 10mb dl/0.5 mb up. I have no issues with speed or ping, I'm just concerned that i dont hit my cap fast.
Now i also stream youtube/tv shows regularly and also download stuff (not very often). Since its summer and im off school I've started playing games more than i used to. What i need to know is how much mb would a typical hour of gaming take up?
Gotta love the horrible Canadian telecom market. -
Download Networx and monitor your bandwidth.
I usually use up about 40-100mb a day from gaming -
Well if it's just for plain gaming, it'll just probably take a maximum of 5GB/month if you're on like, 24/7 or so. Games don't exactly take that much bandwith unless it involves tons of downloading
-
that's why i love my 6MB/s broadband with unlimited upload and download
and its on a 20MB/s plan but still much better than 512kb/s which i used to get on similar plan..
-
Install 'Bandwidth Manager', which can monitor how much traffic that goes through your computer.. Can also be set to warn you if a certain amount of bandwidth already have been used, etc.. Very handy.
-
Rogers? I am on the same plan, but 95gb cap, we would switch to the next one up but our infrastructure is not "up to date".
But your fine, games do not take up a lot of bandwidth. -
Unless you torrent or download a lot (a LOT), I can tell you for sure that you will never have to worry about the hitting 60GB limit.
-
Yeah, Rogers lol. Their plans are overpriced as it is and they keep reducing their caps and increasing overage charges whenever they can. I hate them.
-
I wouldn't worry about it. Games do not consume much bandwidth. Maybe a few GB at most on a busy month.
-
im on bell and theyre no better. Used to have a 60gb plan, argued for 3 hours and by bundling/getting a loyalty discount got a 12mb/s plan with 100gb monthly for the same price as my 60gb plan. maybe you should try to do the same if youve been with rogers a while?
-
The best thing to do is find a company that piggy-backs off of Rogers or Bells lines, they are trying to be competitive so they offer realistic plans. I think TekSavvy is the best for GTA, $55 for same speed but unlimited cap.
-
I'm on contract right now, its gonna be a while till i can switch to teksavvy now that they offer cable.
-
Im in Winnipeg and I had Shaw Cable which was incredible and I want to go back, but its too expensive so im on MTS DSL and gaming is fine, no caps, but DSL does bog down when several computers are on it at once, incredible bottle neck
do games take up alot of bandwith?
