    does every laptop with X3100 supports extended desktop using the VGA output?

    It is an included feature for any notebook with the X3100, just need the right drivers, which are loaded by default.

    is it possible to set the y-resolution in second monitor to be different from the y-resolution in laptop's LCD (in extend desktop mode)?

    i'm fairly sure you can set a different resolution for the second monitor. not entirely sure though.

    Correct, they do not have to match resolutions.

    the desktop doesn't have to be rectangle? it can be two connected rectangles with different heights?

    Yes, my laptop has a 1280x800 screen and can I run a 1920x1080(or was it 1920x1200) CRT simultaneously.

    My video card is an Intel Extreme Graphics 2, which is some 3 generations behind than yours.
