    does having directx10 mean i have all the previous versions installed too?

    hi. i was just wondering if i NEED to download the newest version of directx9c if i already have vista with directx 10. i ask this because frequently when i install a game or prgram, it tries to install directx 9 again. i am unsure why. thanks.

    You can't use DX9.0c with Vista, I believe it uses a built in 9.0L "legacy" version. However, you shouldn't have to install any other DX version, the backwards compatibility will be handled automatically.

    The real answer to the question is NO.

    However like Odin begun to explane it has a DX9L frontend that runs DX9 stuff, but it does not have those actual direct x runtimes.

    Its more or less emulating them.

    DX10 can not handle DX9 or older applications. It's a clean break with prior versions.

    DX9 and all older are 100% backwards compatible. DX9 can play DX1 games without a problem.

    Vista comes with both DX9 and DX10 installed, so you can play any DX app. (But not using DX10)
