can someone please explain why this http://img186.imageshack.us/my.php?image=doommc3.png occurs everything i get shot/hurt when i play doom 3? i just bought a new asus a8 with ati x1700, 1gb memory, 2.00 c2d and windows media center xp. i think i am running the latest ati driver 6.14. and one more thing, that black block only shows up when i play on high setting with 800 x 600 resolution but it goes away if i put it on high setting with 1074 x 768 resolution. is this a defect? thanks in advance.

Did you update to the new Doom 3 for vista 1.3.1?

Try going back to Doom 3 1.3. You may wanna reinstall your doom.

update is always a good idea. 1.3 is the newest for both vista and xp.

ohh thanks.. so it's probably just an driver/software issue and not a hardware issue?

Hopefully yes. There are still some driver problems with the x1700 but I hevent seen your problem yet. If it doesnt work after the update to 1.3 you might want to reinstall doom and upgrade to the newest ATI drivers. Hopefully it will fix it.

It's the Vista patch which is why I asked. If he was having problems it's because he's using xp or a incompatible mod.

After using this patch, alot of mods are incompatible.

i clicked on the update option in the game menu and it says that doom is up to date but it still does it. am i suppose to update it manually because i have never updated it since i installed it.

EDIT: i just manually updated doom3 to 1.3 but when i played the game, it still happens. what should i do now? is it probably ati's driver stuff since the x1700 has issues (at least that's what i heard, dont know how true that is)?

    Well, my only suggestion is...

Now that you've updated to 1.3, you don't need the cd! Just ply at a higher resolution with higher details!

i think i have a new problem now. when im walking, the screen will become choppy, like clear lines are scrolling up and down the screen. is it just doom and my video card because it doesnt do that when i play halo. i tried to take screen shots of what im talking about, but when i paste the screen shot, it doesnt show those clear lines and just looks regular. thanks again for any help

it's called 'use triple buffering and vsync'. ;)

Go to your ati control panel and select those.
