will there be many games that are dx10 exclusive? i have to decide between a new desktop or a notebook, and im choosing a notebook for portability since im going to college. im also going to be gaming a bit and i want to play the latest games, so will a dx9 laptop support me for about at least 2-3 years?

It depends what you mean by "DX10 exclusive." Some games will be better looking if you run it in DX10 (i.e., Crysis and Unreal Tournament 2007), but they will be compatible with DX9. So, you could run Crysis with a DX9 card, but you just wouldn't be able to unlock the special DX10 shadow or physics effects, for example.

A DX9 laptop COULD support you for 2-3 years, depending on how advanced of a game/how much eyecandy you want in a game. I can see a Geforce Go 7900GS or Go 7700 lasting for 2-3 years, running a more advanced game in 2009-2010 on low to medium settings.

However, since DX10 cards just came out, with new, powerful Nvidia offerings like the 8600M GT, which is equivalently powerful to the Go 7900 and is DX10 compatible, I would recommend you to check out any of those laptops (the Asus C90 and G1S are a start).

A desktop would definetly last 3 years with some upgrade. In the case of notebook, forget about it. It is becoming out-dated as we speak. Take a look on the Asus C90S,which is upgradable. I fell in love with it on first sight. Since then i have been advertising it around the forum, as if i work for Asus. :D

yeah i think ill go for the asus c90, i wish it was a bigger screen, like 17", but thats fine, im going to purchase a desktop, or rather assemble my own =), in about 2-3 years anyways. will the c90 be upgradable to 8800 gtx later on?

oh and also, i dont care too much about eye candy, i just want to be able to play the game, because its content of the game than visuals and graphics that appeal to me =)

I think you can safely assume there will be DirectX 9 versions of games for the next few years. The transition to DX10 isn't going to happen fast at all.

Just make sure you realise battery life on that model will be abysmal, it features the same chipset and processor as in a desktop (the Conroe Core 2 Duo) so it's not meant for mobility at all. However, it is a beast at gaming and can me nicely configured for 1300-1400 dollars, so it's a good choice in every other respect.
