hi
is it possible to run a dx10 game on a dx9 card? or will it ONLY run on a dx10 card?
tnx

This year, most games released will be backwards compatible, so that they will be compatible with dx9 cards. However in one year and forth, most games wont be only comp. with dx10
-
To the best of my knowledge, there will be the option of running Crysis on a DX9 card without any DX10 effects.
That's the only thing I know for sure. My educated guess would be that most newer DX10 games will still run on DX9. They might look worse or whatever, but you will have that option. -
Most games will have backwards compatibility, in others words they'll be programmed to use DX9 if that is the only thing available.
Keep in mind that DX10 graphics effects will never work on DX9 hardware, so you will lose some quality. -
so a dx9 will prob last only a year from now
is there any dx9 laptop, which can be upgraded to dx10? -
Nope, its a different motherboard and chipset.

They will only work as they have DX9 effects encoded aswell, DX10 and DX9 have to be separatly for it to be compatable as DX10 offers nothing to DX9 cards.
-
I dont see why not. If they have a MXM port and a directx10 card becomes available then it should work. There is nothing in the Nappa plattform that makes it not work with directx10.

Most laptops cannot be upgraded anyway...
But yes, MXM (if you pay attention to the type of card) would theoretically allow for DX10 cards to be installed on to current notebooks. -
Oops, I was thinking processor, however, it still doesn't mean upgrading is possible. MXM is a gimmick, true, its modular, but the MXM cards are usually made to fit a certain notebook, and not to be mixed around due to different notebook sizes, cooling systems, vents, etc.

As soon as DX9 cards would be running the games slowly anyway (i.e. once the 7950 GTX is playing on mid settings) games will stop being at all compatible with DX9.
EDIT: The only way for MXM to work would be if the GPU companies and notebook companies collaborated on a uniform chassis system where the Graphics module would ALWAYS be in the same place, and (probably in the middle) with the same shape. This would be highly unlikely because it is taking money out of the notebook makers pockets. -
Not just that, we cannot force the companies to make their notebooks the same way.Specially knowing that there are different form factors and different design considerations.
