I am considering purchasing a lenovo x201t. The only thing I am not so sure of is its integrated graphics. I noticed that it has an express card 54 slot. I was wondering if there are any external gpus available compatable with the express card format. If there are are they worth the investment?

Unfortunately, that doesn't allow you you to display the output on the laptop screen :(

While you can't deny the "cool" factor of that, from a practical standpoint it'd be better to just get a desktop.

External GPU extension would be sweet. If you had nothing but horrid GMA or low level integrated chipset.
