I wanted to know if anyone has played games like The Sims 2, Age of empires, or roller coaster tycoon, from an external HD? If so are the results bad? I want to play a few games like that, no big time FPS or anything, but I only have a 40 GB drive now.

Would probably work well. I personally haven't tried, but most external hd's are 7200 rpm so it would have nice loading times.

I wouldn't suggest it. Considering USB2.0 has a burst speed of 480mbs, and Firewire 400mbs, unless you using firewire 800. That seems like a lot, but only for large file transfers. The second you do random file access the connection starts to criple the speed. I'm not sure why though.
If I listen to music off my external (250gig 7200rpm) I can't do anything else off of it, and if I watch a movie off of it, I can't use that connection except for it.

I suggest you move large seldom used files onto there, and install the games to your internal.
