Hi guys am running on gtx 280m graphics.
ran every thing on ultra high setting @ 1920x1080p resolution.
4x AA and 16x AF. Game is freaking smooth and nice till when i hit vats. When entering vats, there is a visible lag immediately and have to wait 1 to 2 second before the options is up for select. i tried turning off the vertical sync however the problem still persist. any one know any solution to this ?
my version of fallout is the latest @ 1.7 too. wonder how to fix thisgame is very enjoyable till you hit the v button

some drivers cause the game to crash upon entering vats, this sounds like a similar problem. so try graphic card drivers like the offcial nvidia 186.82 or something like that.
-
That doesn't happen to me using 186.81 WHQL drivers. Try those. Just remember to fully sweep your old drivers.
-
I thought that was part of the buggy game engine? I get the same thing on both my computers (P-7811FX and M860TU)... I don't think its some kind of hardware or driver issue; I might be completly wrong, though.

I would update the game to version 1.7. Then make sure you update windows gamer live to 2.0 or 3.0. Then you will most likely need to update your pointing device driver, which is a known issue that causes lag in Fallout 3. Hopefully these things will help. I literally installed fallout 3 on my laptop last night. I was wondering what type of performance I would get and like you I was very impressed. Best Wishes, StevenX

I actualy thought this was part of the game like some sort of delay to prevebt slower computer tu lagg to hell by putting a delay where vats option are loaded/calculated and it happen on every driver for me cfx or not vista or 7

Use 186.81 drivers... no issues at alll.. works like magic... can't say that for the beta ones...

I'm pretty sure that VATS lag is a bug in the game, as I experienced it as well on my desktop with ATI graphics. I searched about it and I found that numerous gamers were seeing the same issue across completely different hardware.
-
can I ask... Is this a box copy or a torrented copy? That makes a big difference with small glitches or bugs in quite a few cases. Is your CPU under heavy load? I don't see much of a graphics change between VATS and normal gameplay.
-
I have experienced the VATS issue with my legitimate copy of Fallout 3, and it occurred across all versions. The CPU (see desktop in signature) was under heavy load, but that's normal anyways. And what do you mean by graphics change between the two modes? VATS blurs the background and zooms in on the target.
-
I guess I do not know too much as far as graphics rendering is concerned. But it blurs everything else out and zooms in on a single character model. That has to be less load than running it normally with the distance and everything, right? Or am I missing something
-
I don't think the slowdown in VATS is due to insufficient available computing power or increased computing load. After all, a Core 2 Duo running at 3.0GHz and an ATI 3870X2 shouldn't have a problem handling Fallout 3. I think it is related to the game coding itself, given that the lag occurs during the transition from real-time to VATS.
It only flustered me a few times over the course of the whole game, though. -
The game uses simple DRM, not Tages, what difference would a pirated copy make in this case? The nuke team would discover a bad crack rather quickly.
On topic, I've played Fallout 3 since release last year, it's simply the game not being as optimized as it should, I do remember it's worst now with the latest patch than it was a few patches ago. If it really bothers you, if you have the initial release instead of the GOTY release, reinstall and try each incremental patch until you find a version that suits you, granted it won't have the bug fixes of the newer patches but alas, this is the decrepit hole PC gaming has become, with focus more on consoles. -
This is normal. The VAT system lets you choose your shots on which enemy that is clear. I think this is used to not confuse which enemy you are using the VAT on.

The blurring is depth of field, which is a post-process, and it actually eats resources, but most mid-range cards should handle this just fine.
I say it's a driver issue. I have run this game on an 8600m GT SLi, on very high, minus the anti-aliasing. It was smooth, but I had to switch drivers in order to eliminate the VATS zoom-in problem.
I've actually given up on up-to-date drivers, and rely more on nHancer, but that can be a bit annoying.
