my friend is about to take the plunge he nearly has the cash for the one he likes.

Hes settled on the asus g50, or g51 the model with a 260m gtx 1gb.

Now all id like to know is i can find him affordable ones with the 8800, 9800 and 260 gtx.

But can someone tell me the ati ones. Like whats there equivalent to these cards. Maybe i can find a cheaper deal fr him.

Would anyone recommend the at based ones with same performance.

Im hearing alot about overheating problems

well the price is a moving matter his pc is selling in parts and the moneys coming, but im just looking for an ati option to the nvidia ones.

Maybe they run cooler. Ive seen some of the nvidia ones, the 260gtx go to 95 degrees. Thats insane

    The equivalent are ( weakest to strongest ) the 5730M,5850M, 5870M, 6850M and 6870M :)

Woops :) Thanks for correcting! IMHO, I was on thr limbo, because I initially thought that the 5870>6870,6850.

I heard the 6870M gets a downclock of 25MHz on the core, so it would be slightly weaker than the 5870M on stock clock speeds.

Also those are a couple of gens ahead then what the OP is comparing to.

8800m & 9800m is somewhat matched with the 3870, 260m is around the 4850 (pretty sure)

In general the ATI cards will be harder to find on laptops, the only one I know that is somewhat readily available are MSI gt725 with the 4850, gt735 with the 3850, other than that there are alienwares. The cooling/heating issues are due to the laptop, not the card, and alienwares are about the worst (for that gen) MSI is somewhat better. But the real problem with heating is that some of the Nvidia chips were defective and it makes them fail, where ATi chips will run just as hot and be fine.

The 260m is not defective. You should be able to get an Asus laptop like that for under 600$.

The 5730M is nowhere near the performance of the others (including those four ATI cards and the GTX 260M). Include only the 48-, 58- and 68- series as comparable to (the 58s and 68s are usually better than) the GTX 260M.

The MSI GX640 is a good alternative to the ASUS G51J series (of course, if you don't care about CPU performance, you can't beat the G51VX series' price).

Just a shamless plug but if he's looking at those Asus models I have a G60JX for sale in the for sale section.

The GTS 360m is a pretty decent card and runs comparable to the GTX 260m but is cooler running. Basically the same performance.

    Just a thought anyhow.

That's because the whole line of Asus products that included the GTX 260M were poorly designed and had bad cooling systems.

If you're looking at machines with a GTX 260M, look for a Sager NP8662/Clevo M860TU.

Well, the 5730M ( I have ), does have an impressive performance... Almost as the GTX 260M.
