OK, so I just got my Asus A8jp with an x1700 and am itching to try out one of the new generation games that could take advantage of some of the power that this GPU has.
I like role playing games with lots of attack styles, weapons and stories..sort of like mini quests. On gaming consoles, I would play stuff like Zelda or Tom Clancy or Prince of Persia ....
So.. having said that... which is a good game, without convoluted keyboard controls that I could start playing to get into gaming again? Im not necessarily opposed to or inclined towards FPS', and dont mind animated characters or sometihgn akin to Resident Evil.
Game should be no more than $40, and provide quite a bit of gameplay, challenges, some (little) thinking, and lots of fun.
Please recommend! I have heard Oblivion would be a good game to start with, but know nothing about PREY or FEAR or anything like that. IS something like Gears of War or Lost Planet available for PC?
TIA!

Oblivion is a good game to check out. Refer to the Oblivion thread in the Gaming forum in this website.
You can also look at F.E.A.R. and Call of Duty. -
I forgot about titan quest.
I played that game for a bit, but then I beat it and didn't see the fun in starting over again. I found it's like Diablo, but I didn't get hooked on it like I did with diablo. -
Not sure if you're into strategy-types at all, but perhaps Medieval II is worth a look.
-
Prey is $12 at newegg...
It'll look good at least -
The Jedi Knights (Jedi acadamy and... bother I can't remember the other) series, about 100 hours of game play, have some of the best story line I have ever seen. They don't have the best graphics but they are pretty good. I just remember how cool it was when you got to the higher levels were you fought with other Jedi and there were actually some really good light saber fights. Other than that Oblivion is one I will be checking into soon, see how that is.

hmm..i looked up prey, but apparently it wasnt that great...and apparently the reviews claim its too short and linear...
any feedback on FEAR? also, is oblivion like WOW? I dont want to pay to play online...so if its just me vs the AI, im fine! -
Oblivion is like an MMO, it's just single and you don't pay for it.
Titan Quest is like Diablo, as in best pc rpg ever?
Get both and go home happy. -

anyone like Splinter Cell Chaos Theory? I enjoyed playing Splinter Cell on XBOX.... is this particular sequel good? or should I wait for double agent to become cheap?
PS > These are the kind of games i enjoy...is Diablo like this? never played it...only had a work laptop for 2.5 yrs...so now that im back in the pc world...hehehhe -
FEAR is still a great game to play today, and it has a built-in performance test to show how good your X1700 is.
Oblivion is a very long RPG game that will take you some time to finish, and it will strain your GPU too.
I have only heard bad things about Double Agent for the PC, too many bugs. -
No matter how far it's graphics may lag...Counter-Strike is still my all time favorite, hahaha.
Call of Duty 2, Battlefield 2142, Europa Universalis III, Company of Heroes, Medieval 2: Total War, Warhammer 40,000, Rainbow Six Vegas, Neverwinter Nights 2, Civilization IV, Elder Scrolls IV: Knights of the Nine -

I agree. Oblivion is the pimp. Then ya have Counter Strike which is a super fun online game.
Quake4.
Prey. How about Rogue Spear? Raven Shield? -
Chaos Theory has starforce. That's why it's so cheap.
If you want your dvd drive to die and hafta buy a new computer (Well, I'm not sure how getting a new drive works in the laptop realm...), be my guest and buy it. -
1. Some of the best graphics released to date and probably one of the last high-end games built specifically for DirectX9.
2. Incredibly smart AI
3. I hear the online version is good too, but people are buying FEAR for the single-player gameplay and enhanced graphics.
I own FEAR and COD II. Both are amazing and will test your systems limits. You can adjust the setting to suit your computer but disabeling the soft shadows will give you almost double the performance.
If anyone has played Half Life II and/or counter stike, I would love to hear how the online play is?

The Splinter Cell games are definitely worth checking out, but they do have some problems on the PC. Namely, Chaos Theory has Starfoce, which is definitely a downer, and Double Agent is really problematic on the PC, with hectic system requirements and many bugs. And Double Agent just isn't up to par with the previous Splinter Cells, I mean, Double Agent has some good ideas, but they just end up not working so well. I _hate_ the daytime missions.
FEAR is definitely worth picking up. That is one great first person shooter. It's also fairly lengthy as well, so it's definitely worth checking out. The multiplayer is pretty fun as well. I haven't tried the expansion for it though so I'm not sure about that.
Oblivion is definitely worth checking out. It is in no way like WoW. Oblivion is a single player RPG where the world is open for you to explore and you do not have to do any quest you don't want to. You focus on building your character and joining guilds and stuff.
I would recommend trying out Hitman: Blood Money. It's a great stealth style game, especially if you like stealth games. -
thank you all for the recommendations... any preferred shop to buy em for cheap? GoGamer had a sale a couple of days back, and I was looking at game titles there... I might hit up the local GameStop/EB to see what they have instore...
is newegg a good place to buy games? -
I like Titan quest a lot.
Did not like oblivion the level system is ridiculous (how come you can you finish the game on level 1????)
Medieval total war is overly buged... bugs everywhere, almost unplayable....
Depends on the genre, I still like playing online (free) the warcraft 3 - the map called DOTA (Actually it's a fenomenun right now), very funny, you have a hero and can fight in teams like 5x5... just bbuy weapons and kill oponents... very good one... -
I may have to check out Titan Quest... I have difficulty getting into the whole Morrowind/Oblivion thing because the only thing that got me through Everquest was social interaction. In Morrowind I found myself bored very quickly because I couldn't turn on auto run and chat with my guild and the like.
Anyway, my new machine came in on monday so I'm off to buy Company of Heroes and/or Battlefield 2142 so they take precedent. I've been out of the cutting edge gaming scene for three or four years now only popping my head out for HL2, time to catch up a bit. -
Titan Quest is AMAZING, some people say it's better then diablo, I suggest anyone who loves rpgs to give it a try.
-
If you like RPG's with lot's of different attack types - you can't go wrong with Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines.
That game just rocks and it's built on the Half-Life 2 engine so it'll give your hardware a nice run for its money...
Barring that, I'd say Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Kind of an FPS with swords and shields - but several different weapons (Staffs, Swords, Daggers, Bow, Clubs, etc) each with its own attack animation and, unlike Oblivion, you actually get to feeling fairly powerful as the game progresses... -
-
Anyone played Heroes of Might and Magic V? I heard it was pretty good a while ago, but never really followed up on it.
-
I have Chaos Theory and love it. I paid and downloaded it from UbiSoft. Just download, install, and activate. Gets you the game without StarForce. I've been looking at Oblivion, but I'm kind of afraid I'll get addicted to it, which I don't have time for right now as I'm kinda on a tight schedule between class, homework, and sleeping.
