This part, in combination with the amount of more casual friendly games, is probably true.
Something that wasn't mentioned by anyone yet, is space limitations. Yeah it sort of falls under mobility, but when you realize that a LOT of computer users and gamers are either in college or in a smaller apartment after grad'ing, laptops win by a large margin. You don't want something that takes up a fair amount of space and puts out more heat/noise when in closed quarters...
There's also a psychological disconnect between laptops and desktop for today's mainstream user, too. A fair amount of "average users" (read: barely computer literate) will take a laptop over a desktop even given the price increase, because they are intimidated by desktops (I think it's the cords and setup personally), and because now you can literally take a laptop out of the box and be online in 20 mins.
I await the day when laptops match or replace desktops altogether, because it's certainly trending that way. Everyone wants an all-in-one, portable, do everything gadget now - look at the iphone.
-
Personally I would have very much preferred a desktop if I don't need the mobility. How would I love to play with 3 30" monitors with 3d vision surround.
-
I am awaiting my first laptop(G73), and have only had desktop computers(3 PCs over 12+ years). I didn't go with the laptop for just mobility reasons as many others are stating. Though my desktop is 5 years old(Gateway 836GM) it still runs rather well, and I recently updated to a Windows 7 (32x) and it is running the best it has in years. I went with the laptop just to have a change of pace, and I did not want to rid myself of my old desktop yet. My G73 will be more of a desktop replacement. I have a nice size desk(one of those glass corner desks from Staples) and I will have both computers up and running on each side of the desk.(can't wait!)

G73
.. trust me.. nothing will beat it ...
-
Assuming you watch the World Cup, what are you going to do on Sunday when Spain face Holland in the WC Final
? Who will you support
? I am so curious and I just couldn't pass this ^^ up as it seemed like too good to be just coincidence
.
Of course Sean...lol. I don't think I will ever fully understand the love you have for the G73. "Asus G73 Advocator!" is probabaly an understated description
. You should put like a "Super-Duper" in front of Advocator
.
-
I don't understand as well, especially since he doesn't even have the machine.
-
Sorry for the off-topic but yeah i agree, could not be more of a coincidence hehe. just here for 7 months and bam holland - spain in the final.
But you can bet your life on it that i will be in orange clothing
I left Holland but i did not leave the team!!!
-
Sure there is laptops beating the G73, like Sager/Clevo and the M17x with crossfire 5870.
-
Desktops for now.
Laptops in the future. Why? External video card setups, more powerful laptops, and possibly cheaper too. All that's really needed is an big monitor to go with ur laptop and you'll essentially get the same as playing on a desktop. -
"gaming on laptops"
I game perfectly fine on my Alienware M17xr2 and i have no problems running games on the highest settings with little to no lag.
I dont have the space for a desktop and i like the fact that i can take my laptop and game, watch movies etc. anytime anywhere. With my aleinware laptop i have increased flexibility and mobility over a desktop.
I like the fact that i can be playing cryisis or somthing on my laptop on the couch at one moment and then be able to continue playing in the bathrooom on the toilet, then go outside and continue playing in my front or back yard. -
Things are geting down right sadistic over at mmorpg(from the same thread I posted), look at what the last user wrote about me...originally posted by jammertk10
Further reading of Eycel's posts has lead me to a more complete conclusion. He is either a nasty troll who gets off wanting to confuse and waste others time, in which case I quite honestly say, good luck with the world, they don't have a damn second for attention-greedy s like you and neither do we. Or the second scenario is he is bluntly a misinformed stubborn man who won't listen to anyone's opinion, he only intends to shove his down everyone else's throats. In either case the solution is to simply let him go on unnoticed, the cure to a misbehaving child is A) Discipline (which unfortunately cannot be dealt over the internet) or B) Starving her/him of attention. Also, in either case, I really hope you find the will and a way to change at some point, you'll get a lot further with kind words rather than harsh mud-slinging.
Scary how people get angry about having there desktops compared to a laptop. Now I may not be the most gentle person when it comes to writing but I think this is going out of line. Jammer is very aggressive and violent in his words. These people are dangerous I think. I have to deal with violent people all the time in real life, but the internet is my sanctuary to come and relax from the world. -
i've always prefered laptops to game on. desktop/external keyboards just don't feel the same to me.
don't worry about random idiots on the internet. most of those idiots haven't, and will not amount to much in their life. that's why they have to sit behind a screen all day and try to talk down on other people. those types of guys are usually on a small budget, so they have to stick with desktops for obvious reasons. does it make one better than the other? nope. it's all personal preference at the end of the day. -
I don't understand why you'd want just one system to do it all. Personally I'd have both, one desktop and one laptop. Both can be bought for the price of one top of the line laptop. This way I can enjoy better performance at home but can still play when I'm on the move with lower settings. Most of the laptops that have serious horsepower aren't what I'd like to lug around anyway.

Exactly...completely agree. That was the whole point to laptops/notebooks originally. Make the PC portable.
What you choose to do with a portable computer (web browsing, word processing, database administrating, programming, multimedia enjoying, gaming, etc) is up to you, and nowadays determines the level of portable hardware you will buy...(the only advantage that I see in a netbook over a PDA/Smartphone is a keyboard)...
But as the portable market has reached 'specialization', the disturbing trend for me is the size/weight of 'gaming' laptops...it really, really hurt my feelings to step up to a 17" chassis in 2008...I wanted to stay at 15" and buy the Alienware m15 with an 8800GTX, but it didn't seem that the build quality was there...
One of the reasons that I almost immediately bought an m11x (breaking my normal five year cycle) was the gaming potential on what I consider the minimum size platform for gaming that doesn't significantly compromise the interface (eg, keyboard and touchpad...you could say screen, but 11" is just a wee bit on the small side).
The m11x has a decent video card in a 13" chassis (with a lot of bezel to accomodate the undersized 11" screen) with a good cooling system and good battery life. I just finished Mass Effect on the m11x (so I could start with a better character on ME2 on the m11x), and I thought it was every bit as fun and compelling as on the m1710. I could have bought ME and ME2 for the 360 and played it on the home theater, but I chose the m11x so I could take ME2 with me...
So, in my opinion, the only advantage that the laptop has ever had over a desktop is portability...but that's a huge advantage and the reason for the price premium...having started using computers in the 80's, it still amazes me what is packed into a laptop...(and when I figured out that I could run a Sega Genesis emulator full speed on a PSP, I knew I was ready to move on from this life...nothing could be better that...and before you say it, no, really...nothing could be better...)
(And for some reason, despite the preceding paragraph, there's something about a laptop that appeals to me on an aesthetic level and has ever since I stopped using my desktop and started using my 315CDT...) -
I totally agree with you, although i don't have a desktop my xps 1730 (which i never take out) can be classified as such and i don't feel the need to always be gaming on the move, well i have really have the urge to game, my macbook pro (which i do take out) is enough to satisfy myself until i return home.

there is some fail in that thread..
"There are some pretty powerful ones out there, specifically alienwares newest, but even those are apparently just barely able to play new games (like MW2) with a decent framerate"

He could mean 3 30" monitors in native resolution in eyefinity, which is what I would do if I'm playing on a desktop.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015

Wilco
ur wish is my command! But i'm really getting tempted by Sager's etc... but still Asus G73 FTW!
Same here.. laptops feel much better in a way for me to game on compared to desktops.. -
I kinda understand the idea of the 3 monitors being full vision giving you a spacial effect for your eyes, but one big 52 inch or even projector can bring you in just aswell as 3 monitors. And if you really were picky about having that spacial effect, you might aswell go out an buy yourself a 1080p goggle display, im not sure of the actual name I worked at a game store and a guy brought a set in one time, its a monitor inside of glasses, so your fully field of vision is the monitor only. Which would block out all outside distractions.
EDIT: Oh forgot to add, im totally not a fan of the 3 monitors the bezels make it look like your looking into windows, the image gets cut into 3 ugly parts
, I prefer my 52 inch any day.
-
If i wanted a spacial effect i would go for Curved display for gaming.
-
Thats exactly what im talking about, except in a set of snowboarding goggles, coolest thing ive ever seen, soo much more practical, thank you to the inventor of OLED technology
, you make me a happy conusmer.
-
When do you think will see oleds come out in laptops?
-
Not for atleast 5 years. The manufacturing process for 10" + screens degrades the chemicals in use making the screen last only about a year. As of right now there is only the sony 10" OLED tv on the market, more near the end of the year at around the same size. The other problem with OLED is its cost prehibitive, its too expensive to produce in bigger sizes right now, the sony 10" OLED retails for $4000.00 roughly so unless you got some mad cash burning a hole this wont happen in the near future.
But like I stated earlier great application in goggles giving you full field of vision screen, im sure coupled with a few sensors it would be a step into virtual reality aswell (head tracking to turn players perspective in game to the motion of your head).
