hey i got this computer 3 weeks back. I am getting choppiness during COD4 on medium settings, i dont even have the option for high settings, the game freezes for a split second everytime there is a lot of action. CDmark06 is 7000 and all my diagnostic checks are within normal limits.

i have the hardrive clicking issue as well as the fan on the left toward the back will turn on at random times even if the computer is idle.

ive tried everything short of reinstalling vista

probably a driver issue...are your drivers updated?

reinstall your drivers and re install the game, this laptop is capable of max no prob for that game.

Upgrade the driver to 169.09 or better, use Laptopvideo2go http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers My stock driver didn't support DX10.

i think it could be a disk problem because when i first got the computer it ran a lot better.. ive defragmented and ran chkdisk. it sometimes shoots up to 100 % on task manager ive also added a lot to my HD. My nvidia driver is updated not 169.09 but the most recent on their site.

should i go ahead and purchase an external HD, save all my things then clean install vista. If that doesn't work contact gateway??

I dont know if HD issue would cause sudden brief pauses during any intense activity, or the fan noise that turns on every 2 minutes located on the left rear side

167.46 and yes battery is set to high preformance, like i said, im getting 7000 in 3dmark

im still wondering why the fan on the left rear turns on, on cue like every 2 minutes and runs for about 2, and then repeats.. even when idle

Install the 169.09 and I'am sure your problem will go away, the 167.46 is the stock Gateway driver. It fixes alot of the problems with newer games.

i will try it but the computer has been running differently outside of games like i said, and if i remember correctly there have been people who ran COD4 with stock everything fine.

i am using the 173.xx drivers which are clevo based i.e. made for a notebook. i bet if you tried those the problem would go away. fan coming on is normal even at idle, but i will say the 173.xx runs cooler than any other driver that i have tried. trust me i have tried them all at this point. like snowsurfer said it is 99.9 percent a driver issue and 169.09 and up should be the best. they are all pretty decent, personal preference i guess, but for dx10 games they are a must. oh and top left is your 8800 fan just fyi.

installed the 169 driver, didnt work. im still getting 7000 in 3dmark score but COD gets choppy in any big gun fights and this is on medium settings, doesnt even let me adjust it higher than medium.

im going to try the rollback to factory settings option on the OS disc that came with it. Should i DVD any drivers ?

It might be the slower CPU. This happens to me too. While i play, and i'm under heavy fire with a lot of other players online, it sometimes gets really laggy. theres a new driver out now, the 173 version. try that.

and how did you get 7000 on 3dmark06. i only got...check my sig.

the whole driver thing really confuses me. why would nvidia's website not be offering a competant driver for a high end video card? ive seen tons of posts on here where people played COD4 at max settings with factory drivers.. i know i had dx10 out of the box
