is there really going to be a huge(noticeable) difference? for the 8600 GT.

You'll see a difference in the 3D Mark scores but in game performance will be similar.
-
so if in-game performance is similiar then why are most people making such a big deal out of it?
-
because some people really care about 3D Mark scores, for bragging rights or other purposes. Thus, a difference in RAM is a big thing for them. For the rest of us, it's really not a big deal.

In playing games you will never notice the difference between ddr2 vs ddr3. The only time where you're going to see it make a difference is in 3D Mark06.

ddr2 vs ddr3 doesn't matter much, except ddr3 can clock higher. if you have an 8600m gt that has a lower memory clock, you will see game performance go down.
as long as it is up to spec, it doesn't make a difference. i think the problem was the ddr2 board was clocked at like 400 mhz vs 700 mhz on the ddr3. so thats 1.75x memory speed. plus the 8600m gt is really memory hungry on that 128 bit bus... its definitely not 75% faster in games, but it is definitely going to be enough to see the difference.
gddr2 vs gddr3
