i wanted to get an alienware laptop, but they all seem to use radeaon graphics cards. Ive heard geforce is better, so would it be better to just get a differnt laptop that gives me to option of getting a geforce graphics card, or does the radeon work just as well as geforce (maybe even better on alienware computers
-
In regards to Alienware laptops, I have no idea. I've always dismissed them as a rip off.
In general, neither is any better/worse than the other. In DirectX, an ATi is usually SLIGHTLY ahead of nVidia, but nVidia beats ATi handily in OpenGL. It's best to research the capabilities of the individual card options, rather than the brand name. -
Iceman0124 More news from nowhere
in the high end laptop offerings nvidia is the best, the x1800 cant really hang with the 7900 gs, let alone the 7950gtx, the waters get really murky from there, especially since memory and clock configurations vary significantly from one builder to another

I would have to say that the Nvidia gfx cards are better as far as notebooks I've seen a 7900 gs & x1800 and to me its not even close.Just my two cents

Statements like "GeForce is better" and "Radeon is better" do not make any sense - try not to believe blind rumors. What kind of games do you want to play and what type of laptop are you looking at? You should complete the FAQ in the What Should I Buy forum for recommendations. Don't base your buying decision on rumors that a certain component is better than another. As a matter of fact, don't even base your decision on the manufacturer of the video card at all - base it on the class of video card you need - high-end, mid-range, etc.
The GeForce Go7900GS does not compare with the X1800 to begin with, so it's not a valid comparison. The MR X1800 compares with the Go7800. ATI does not produce a notebook card at the moment to compete with the Go7900 series. -
The 7900GS isn't that great a card anyway - well, relatively speaking, of course its a good card but not quite the beast people make it out to be. You can nearly overclock a 7600gt to reach 7900gs speeds without additional cooling.
The X1800 is alot closer to the 7900GS then people seem to think... -
well no ATI cards can beat the 7950 or the SLI configuration(becoz ati just doesnt have it), i would say go nvidia for now. (Notebooks system)
-
Well, I have benched the 7900GS and I'm benching the x1800 right now, so we should get a somewhat better view on that rather soon
-
This is true. It is also true though, that counterparts of the same level from the two brands are essentially the same in terms of performance (i.e. x1600 vs. go 7600).
I wouldn't let ATI vs. nVidia make my decision for me--I would choose the system that best fits my needs.
Other than the slight advantage each has over the other in certain games, most of those statements are opinion-based. -
Speaking from experience, I always let my wallet decide for me. When I had my desktop I always bought Nvidia cards, for the simple reason that whenever I came to upgrade, Nvidia always had a card in a good price/performance bracket that suited my needs. When it came to laptops, ATI was there for me.
Do some research on the products that suit your wallet best, and draw your own conclusions on the data any review sites give to you. You can always ask for assistance on online forums but lets be honest, you often get a couple of fanboys turning up with their respective colours on. -

- Maybe in a notebook sector they dont but x1950xtx is fastest single core ghraphics card out there, ever heard of CrossFire? -
What I would say is that similar discussions seem to be a guide leading to middle of nowhere.
