The Go7900GS is more powerful than the Go7800 by a fair amount . . you can overclock the Go7800 and get around 5,500 points in 3DMark05. The Go7900GS is about 12% slower than the Go7800GTX, so expect around 6,400-6,500 points in 3DMark05. that's a fairly large difference.
The TDP of the Go7900GS is low indeed. very impressive for the amount of performance it offers. For comparison, the Go7800GTX consumes 40W at TDP, and the Go7900GTX 45W.

My new 7900GS is on the way! My unopened 1705-GO7800 had just been delivered. So, i called and configured with cupon and told Rep about unopened unit. He set up a no cost RMA for UPS. Thanks to all on this forum I have the 20 watt chip being built. If I just get cooler running and same performance.. I'm ahead!
Delivery is set for the 26th -

Great to hear about your new notebook.
Indeed the 7900 GS is a leader in performance/watt. Only 20 TDP! While the X1600 has 17 TDP! I hope nVidia continous with these energy efficient chips, maybe playing mobile for 2 hours is possible!

I didn't even realize Dell was offering the Go7900GS on the E1705; that's a great option. I'd upgrade to it in a heartbeat.

I called support and tried to do something about getting a 7900 GS and sending this one back but I was forwarded to a sales person.... and I always get the stupid arse stuborn sales people that won't give me the same discounts or coupons I used to get this one... GOD the stuborn sales people are FRUSTRATING ME!!!! It seems other people have no problems at all returning stuff or getting even a better deal by talking to a sales person.
Any help here would be great. That or any names of GOOD sales people/support people. -
I'm buying the 17" monster due to wacked marketing, eh? Well there is the huge cost difference to like a 1705 vs Alien or the neat Sagers/Clevo's.
I was way happy with my old 1280x800. So what if the screen is less than max chip specs..plug in the external monitor!

I successfully set up a return for my week old E1705 (no restock fee), got the 7900 equipped E1705 plus 1 GB free RAM and free overnight shipping for only about $70 more! I would have saved $30 but I couldn't find a $100 off coupon in time
Oh well!
I was considering just returning the E1705 and getting an Asus, but I don't think I can go back to a smaller resolution after using the 1900x1200 for a weekPlus, this new GPU is going to rock, so Dell won out this time!
-
Aww, damn it. I don't want to return my E1705, I spend some much time formatting and moving everything to it.
Is the Go7800 upgradable later on? If so, how easy is it? -
yes its very easy but so expensive you probably wont do it.
actually let me edit and say its reasonably easy. -
dell underclocked go7800 to 320 mhz :/ we will see what settings will setup dell in 7900 gs
i paid for mine e1705 1295 $ for 100$ more i could get 7900gs :/ that sux
but i cant now return they that laptop
-
yes
there is a little chance that i can return mine laptop to dell and order new one with 7900 gs
mine famliy recived e1705 with go 7800 at 2 may
i talked with guy from dell and he told that they have time till 23 may to send it them back without problems
yeah there is a little hope

Call them and tell them. That way you told then before sending it back. They shouldn't have a problem with it. Just make sure you talk to a supervisor.

It sucks for us that purchased our systems awhile ago though. I've had mine since February.....and I found that Dell does NOT sell the 7900 seperately.....anyone have an idea of how I can get the 7900 into my 7800 equipped system? Do I need to break it and send it in to get fixed?? -
My order just shipped this morning! and I just found out about the 7900 gs option this morning too =/. After reading the success stories on this page, I happily contacted Dell through live chat to try to cancel my order. They said its already shipped... So I tried to set up a return, and they said that I have to pay shipping + 15% restocking fee.
After that I tried calling their customer service, and I get the exact same answer.... How did you guys do it?? why won't they let me return/exchange mine. Sure its in transit, but the box isn't even opened yet. Some people have had it for a couple of weeks and they can still return it with no fee. Any hints/tips?
By the way, for reason of return I said that I want to upgrade the video card with the newly available option (that wasn't there when I ordered). Is that the reason why they charge me 15%? Do I have to lie and say something is broken? -
WOW. Everyone is turning in there go 7800 and trying to change it to the 7900. Sure it is slightly faster but is that worth more then a hundred dollars??? I doubt it, but if you have money to spend go head a new card will eventually come out and you will be like dam.
Do whatever feels good.
-
Its definitely worth $100.. faster and less power consumption.
My problem is that they're making me pay for shipping + restocking fee.... add the price of the card, thats $400 for a card upgrade. Boo. -
Wow, glad I saw this thread. I had just changed my order swapping the x1400 for the 7800....now called again and changed to the 7900GS. My wife thinks I'm crazy but the fact that its a cooler running card was all i needed to hear. Dell's charging $150 more for the upgrade, but I was able to downgrade my memory from 1GB 667 to 1GB 533 and save a couple of $s in the process. Whee...Now I'm really set! Thanks guys!

Mine is due on the 26th, yours should be in on the 30th?
Have you found any recent posted bechmarks for the 9700GS?
Ah! Found one here for the Toshiba http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=50029
Search is your friend! -
Just got my RMA and am ready to return to Dell w/o shipping/restock fee. However, I still cannot decide whether or not I'll be better off staying with this one vs. a re-order.
hydra: how did you manage to get your new config. for $20 less?? -
gd-student,
I'm not sure if it's a $20 difference looking at your sig. It looks like it could be more like a few hundred. I have a 7200rpm HDD, 7900GS, 2 gig's of DDR 667, additional battery, additional AC adapter and bluetooth. Sorry I'm just basing my opinion on your sig. Honestly it took me two days with talking to 3 different sales reps before I got them to bend to that price. It's all a big sales game. These companies are making a killing on this stuff. Take the warranty alone for instance, there probably making millions on just that alone. You just have to know how to play the game, that's all.
Oh just a quick note....I'm opting for the 7900 over the 7800 for one major reason and that is it runs a hell of a lot cooler. I've heard things about the 7800 been warm enough not for you lap. -
hydra: how did you manage to get your new config. for $20 less??
When I first configured old system, 8-5-06, I came up to $1,363.76 NOT using any coupons. When I re-ordered, using -$750 coupon, I got the new system for $1,342. This is with the GO7900GS and the XGA to UXGA screen!
I really, really wanted the XGA for best native frame rates but after so many posted complaints, during the last week, I backed off. I have a 17" Sony CRT at the house so I will use it on the difficult games but hoping the 7900, with the extra Gig of fill rate, will suffice.
When the T2600 or the 64bit Intel’s are mainstream, plop that puppy in when the price is right. Looking at the 9400/1705 repair manual, this notebook is light-years more accessible and up-gradable than my old Arima ATI9600. -
I just ordered a new E1705 a couple days ago with the new 7900GS. I can't wait to see how all my games will look on it!!
I'm planning the same thing as hydra. When 4gb of ram actually becomes affordable and mainstream, as well as the merom chips, there will be some sweet upgrades in the future. -
"I'm planning the same thing as hydra. When 4gb of ram actually becomes affordable and mainstream, as well as the merom chips, there will be some sweet upgrades in the future."
correction: sadly e1705 permits a max of 2gb, not 4gb like does the m1710; besides, that's an overkill for what most of us do w/ our lappies. -
I drool over the 7900GS.
-
That will certainly help with the cooling -
Really? That's disappointing. I guess I just assumed since it was core duo that it had the same mobo. This laptop will be for fairly heavy gaming and other applications for college. I really want the portability of a laptop, and something affordable (hence getting the 1705 and not a XPS).
Since my laptop is still in the pre-production phase, is it possible to cancel an order? I'm having a lot of second thoughts now... -
-
uhh i will stay with mine go 7800
they want re-stock fee & shipping from mine uncle
GL for others who want to return they laptops
-
Great news about the 7900gs option.
I know this is a little OT, but does anyone make a 15.4" with a top-end vid card option? I am only going 17" to get a top GPU. Man, if they only offered it on the 1505.
TIA -

The 6800 Ultra is more powerful than the X1600 and the 7600 Go. It is often more powerful than the7800. Even the 7800 Go at stock settings gets a lower 3dmark05 score than an X1600 sometimes.
-
Well, looks like I go 17". Thanks for the info.
-
BTW, here's some benches, courtesy Nvidia:
The 7900's score is about 15.4% higher than the 7800. -
That's a good increase I guess, but I still like my 7800 card.
-
Might not add much to the debate but a 7900GS will run Oblivion maxed out a 1440X900.
-
7800 is a great card too. I mean Jesus, gaming lappies are a fortune (<$3000) and you can get a decent 17" gaming laptop with the e1705 for around $1100! Helluva deal.
To me, the deal-maker is the lower wattage on the 7900. Not so much for battery life, as I don't game on battery, but the heat. I do intent to have kids someday.
I think the lower heat of the 7900 would leave more overclocking headroom as well, but that's just a theory.
-
How'd you get this deal? I'm looking at buying the same laptop but with the $750 off coupon I stilll come out close to $2700. Your help would be appriciated.
Thnks -
Once overclocked, the 7900 GS is an animal, destroying the 7800 GTX and easily reaching stock 7900 GTX speeds.
http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=157393 -
Heh, Flash...I think I may just do that. In BF2 I forced it to run at 1920x1200 maxed out and I get a tad bit of lag every now and again. It's fairly simple yes? How safe was it? What are your temps, others temps? Maybe I'll look @ the thread to see the programs they use to monitor and such as well.
-
check out the thread (and the original) there is a ton of info including temps, etc.
-
Hey all! Just wanted to update you. I did end up sending my old lappy back and getting the 7900 GS, and I love it. It runs so much cooler than the 7800. I average around 49 degrees with the fans on slow at all times via I8kfanGUI. The card also gets a 6340 score in 3DMark 05, which is a lot higher than the 7800.
-
So, no more overclocking for a while?Did you post any real world FPS differences between OC and no OC drivers?
I'm wondering if it's worth the hassle to OC the 7900GS
TIA -
Wow, I'm SO glad to hear that the 7900gs is an awesome card, I just ordered my 1705 (with 7900gs) on the 14th, cant wait till it gets here. Could I safely say that it will run BF2 on high settings with little lag?
