What's a good game that I should get right now that many players will still play in the future?

I know CS 1.6 is one, but besides that what are some other ones? Multiplayer is best.

Battlefield 2142 I think... a bunch of my friends have been playing it for awhile... I'd like to say AOE3 also.

I would say Left 4 Dead due to its fan base. I have 5+ friends that are on the zombie train....and will probably not leave the game. Once I can get it, I will be in the same boat. Unreal Tournament 2004 I believe also still has a large playing population. Nowadays, a game is $50 at max, so finding something for a year then moving on would be a worthwhile investment, IMHO.

TF2 looks like a great game but I dont want to buy it and then find no people playing it 6 months later. I have fallout 3 and fc2, but I'm looking for more of a multiplayer game?
Are there still a lot of people playing Supreme Commander? It's such a good game if you play against other people. Its AI sucks. What about Sins of A Solar Empire?

Any form of Counter Strike is timeless.

COD4 seems to be insanely popular as well.

    you're kidding?

10 years after release, if you logon to starcraft battle.net on a saturday night there are still 90,000+ users online.

And Starcraft 2 is going to be even bigger.

Given Valve's history and extremely loyal fanbase, (CS 1.6 still has players 8-9 years later), TF2 will not be going away any time soon. But if you really want to future proof, buy Left 4 Dead.

Strong agree. I strongly disagree with most other suggestions in this topic, but I'm fairly certain TF2 will last for a long time. Players will start to drop off, but everytime an update is released, tons of people will flock back, then slowly drop off again. This game will be popular for years to come, I can safely say that.

I don't think L4D is going to last too long, it's kinda a novelty game. A lot of people I know are already piquing, I expect that the amount of people playing will be a small fraction of those playing now in 6 months time.

I don't understand all the hype about L4D, sure it's a fun game but as Hep! said it's all novelty, not a great foundation for a timeless game

Starcraft2 is going to be popular for a long time. Starcraft1 is still very popular. Warcraft3 is popular too, but im afraid SC2 may have a bad impact on the WC3 community =( Soon is DotA more popular than the game itself =(

I would say Counter Strike Source. It's been many years since the game's release, and there are still thousands and thousands of servers online. Im not sure as to what the count of players are exactly, but I know there are about 50-100+ servers that have 64 players online 24 hours a day. The reason alot of people like CS:S is because you're not just limited to normal play like in COD4 and others. The community has made Surfing, Gun Game, Zombie, Hide + Seek, and many others.

All I know about Supreme Commander is that there's one more expansion in the works and there will be a Supreme Commander 2, but nothing released about it other than who the publisher will be.

As for TF2, Hep didn't say people only come back when there's new content, but that there will be an influx of players returning to play in order to try the new content and then slowly leave as they finish getting the achievements or get bored.

StarCraft 2 will probably be the most futureproof game I can think of. Following that would be Valve games: CS:S, TF2 & L4D. :)

I'll buck the trend and suggest TBS games like Civilisation 4 and the Heroes of Might and Magic series (especially 3 and to a lesser extent 5 done by Nival).

Well the trend he was trying to buck was the multiplayer/fps trend by suggesting some single player primary games who's enjoyment isn't affected by other people.

Call of Duty World at War while new, has a lot of servers up, and doesn't seem will be waning soon. It's basically a reincarnation of the very popular CoD4 multiplayer, but in WWII. It's fun, addictive, and pretty well balanced. It has its faults, namely the respawns, perhaps the tanks, martydom and last stand perks, and the common mp40 spray and prayers, but that doesn't keep me from playing lol.

Last I checked, CS 1.6 has a ****** user base than any other valve game by a pretty good margin. Source may end up taking that title when finally the 1.6 user base gets old and the younger generation takes over.

L4D will definitely stay for a while, it takes a while just to beat every campaign on expert, but even after that the multiplayer versus is what will really keep it going, moreso than even COD 5 i think, just cause COD 5 seems good for now but a lot of people i know complain its just trying to be COD 4 WWII but not quite succeeding and some people play it for a while and then would rather jump back on COD 4 until 6 comes out at least. I also agree with the Civ 4 notion, its great for long single player games, but is also really fun for LANing when u have a lot of time to kill as well

World of Warcraft, future fanbase and company support are guaranteed. Everyone is addicted to it, the players are addicted to raiding and Blizzard is addicted to it being a cash cow.

I will warn you, once you start it's very hard to quit. I know a few who quit and they lasted anywhere from weeks to months but they all ended up back on it again.

4 players max for story-mode co-op, 8 players max for versus mode (story mode basically, except you can have 4 players control boss zombies).

Nobody even gonna say Battlefield 1942! There are still a ton vanilla servers and then all the mods, DC being the most popular. Any CS and TF game are pretty good bets that they will be around for a long time, crazy fan base. COD4 is still pretty new and I got tired of it a lot faster then BF2142 which I got a lot faster tired of then BF2 (still a good game, but a pain in the *** for finding a good server). I would say COD4 is a good game and its gonna have a lot of players for a while to come, but I can see large a population of the game leaving in the next year (not to mention COD:WW now), but take note how long other COD games have lasted. Quake 3 Arena is an oldie, but goody and a community to back it. Its just isn't to Vista friendly which I can see putting a crink in the community.

Might I add that alot of the games that have lasted the longest (BF1942, CS, TF and Q3A) have a pretty universal appeal. They are active multiplayer games specializing in some aspect and can be played on almost any system no matter the specs. All of them will even play on an EEE...well.

$20 for Battlefield 2, Special Forces, EuroForces and Armored Fury (Battlefield 2 Collection); a community that's still kicking and probably will keep kicking until BF3 is released which isn't even under the radar yet.

If you're worried about multiplayer, RTSs aren't very favorable to the amount of users playing. Take a gander at X-Fire's gaming population:
    http://www.xfire.com/games/
    TF2: #23 7,325users/day
    SC: #94 1,220
    SSE: 127 599

Not to be taken literally since most gamers don't use X-Fire and doesn't account for Steam users.

TF2 will always have people playing. It won't fade away. BF2 is getting numbered as the players and servers are dwindling leaving the diehard fans behind.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Battlefield: Heroes. From the looks of it the game could be hugely popular, esp. that it comes free and has low system requirements. I think it can rival TF2 in terms of fun factor.

    SOE Infantry ( link)
This game has been out for 9 years and although its player counts have dwindled there are a lot of diehard fans (including me) who still play this.
