Minimum System Requirements
* OS: Windows Vista (Service Pack 1) / XP (Service Pack 3)
* Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8 Ghz / AMD Athlon X2 64 2.4 Ghz
* Memory: 1.5 GB RAM; 16 GB hard drive space
* Video card: 256 MB NVIDIA 7900 / 256MB ATI X1900
Recommended System Requirements
* OS: Windows Vista (Service Pack 1) / XP (Service Pack 3)
* Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4 Ghz / AMD Phenom X3 2.1 Ghz
* Memory: 2 GB (XP) / 2.5 GB (Vista) RAM; 18 GB hard drive space
* Video card: 512 MB NVIDIA 8600 / 512 MB ATI 3870
i don't think i have ever seen requirements like this in any game.

Recommended quad core?
Dayummm. -
That sucks.
I was thinking about picking up this game for the PC, but I don't even meet the minimum requirements.
A desktop nvidia 7900 is a ridiculous minimum spec. -
That's because no other game has ever had requirements like this!!
This basically means it's mandatory to have Shader model 3, and that the game probebly won't have alot of user configurable graphics options much beyond screen resolution.
Whatever though, I just hope Crossfire works on it.
Btw, that doesn't seem right, are you sure that's final?! Look at the reccomended, they put NVIDIA 8600 / ATI 3870.. but last I checked the 3870 was probebly a good 2.5x faster?
Also a Q6600 is around 2x faster than the Phenom X3, so this also doesn't size up..
It looks poorly thought out/made up. -
Those requirements are stupid - a 7900GT is faster than an 8600GT by a good margin.
-
holy sh*t 18GB of hard drive space.
and the recommended processor doesn't make any sense... -
a quad core ***? how cpu intensive can it be?
-
That's rediculous, but companies like AW just love it when games come out like this. I'll bet that many people will put down $3000+ on a new system just to be able to play this game.
-
-
You're right, that is really weird.
Maybe they got it reversed or something? -
wow rediculous
-
I'm sure the game will run fine. The graphics on the don't look that taxing at all so newer cards (9600M+) should have no problem. 18GB makes sense, the game is HUGE! I played for weeks and only got 30%. It's so worth it though, the story is awesome.
-
I don't believe it yet. This is Joystiq, so I'll wait to hear it from somewhere else. Why the heck would you need a Quad-Core, but only an 8600? This ain't Supreme Commander.
-
The 18GB actually doesn't make sense to me, at all..
If it's the same game as the console versions, well the Xbox 360 is limited to a DVD9 disk The total space on those if I can recall is slightly over 8GB, so how does this turn out to be 18GB on PC? Will this game come with two DVD9 disks? Or do they have some really insane compression methods? -
Okay there is numerous sites reported this as the recommended requirements:
Operating system: Windows XP with SP2
Processor: Dual core processor (Intel Pentium D or better)
Minimum RAM: 2 GigaByte
Hard Drive: 18GB free HDD space
Graphics Card: 512MB Direct3D 10 compatible graphics card or Direct3D 9 card compatible with Shader
Drive: DVD-ROM dual-layer drive -
i really think this is an error though, i mean 16gb for minimum, and 18 for max?

Many here will probably remember the ridiculous requirements for Assassin's Creed before it was released, maybe this game will follow the same route and get released with something less unbelievable.
-
This reminds me of Crysis. There go my hopes of being able to run it on my lappy
-
I think the recommended NVIDIA card was perhaps meant to be the 8800 GT, which is similar (although quicker) than the 3870. The 8600 is not in the same class as the 3870 AFAIK.
Or, perhaps it was optimised to run on NVIDIA hardware, and ATI products might take a hit. -
Will this work on XP SP3 with 7150M (128MB), 3GB RAM, and the AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60 2.0 GHz? Guess not. At least XP works better than Vista over here.

i believe the cpu requirements. gta4 is doing heavy physics simulation just for your character walking around, on top of everything else.
-
Actually, now that I think about it, and I didnt notice it on the console but, GTA4 has some beautiful crysis-like explosions when you blow up cars, heavy motion blurring and all types of in-game cinematic effects...hmm!
-
Though the AI life and physics combination is probably a killer on the CPU
The requirements really are insane. I suppose the disk space requirement makes sense seeing as the city is massive and maybe Rockstar doubled the texture size or something...
I just hope the min requirements are horrifically overstated so that I may still have a chance to play it -
yeah, remember all the previous gtas?
-
What I am saddened about is that Major Nelson has stated the Xbox 360 exclusive DLC will not come to PC, even though its a Games for Windows LIVE title, with all the 360's achievements for example. I hope it can come to the PC eventually.
Like Microsoft had secured exclusive DLC for the PC and 360 versions of Fallout 3, how about some love for the PC version?
Or maybe all the mods the PC version will get will make up for the lack of DLC. We still don't know what the heck it is and its only months from release! -
GTA IV was "going to be a PS3 exclusive" wasn't it?
-
im sure the mods will make up for the non dlc.
-
How could those specs be so high if an Xbox and ps3 could run them?
-
cuz the 360 and the PS3 have insane CPU, (3 core Power PC and the Cell)..but yeah at least the graphics card requirement should have been lower, cuz the both use something equivalent to the 7800 GT
-
also it didnt run very well on the consoles.

Quad core?!?!?!?!? oh ****..
-
I wonder how many customers they will lose because of these reqs?
I really wouldnt like to see Rockstar blaming pirates for lack of sales like Crytek did... -
Of course they will. Their games will require insane configs and when less than 5% of all PC gamers will be buying it, they will cry hoarse from their rooftops saying that piracy ruined their PC sales. Sorry I don't want any more of your games Rockstar. I am fed up of this hypocrisy.

-
The notebook on my sig can run Crysis and Warhead at all medium at 1024x768 resolution in XP. And that thing don't even come closer to the minimum specs of GTA IV. What do you mean? GTA IV is more demanding than Crysis!!! I think it is a ploy of Rockstar to avoid PC gaming completely. Anyway they have announced that the next GTA version will be exclusively for the PS3.
-
nvidia reference 8600 gt cards comes with 256mb gddr3 as standard, so 512 indicate that it's a 8800 -
both of my machines can run it smoothly
-
thanks for rubbing it in.
-
Oh snap, quad core. ._.
-
if it needs quad core, that means 99% of laptops will struggle to run it?
-
I'm sure it can use a dual core, but at a hit in performance. Too bad, my E8400 in my desktop is otherwise more than capable of handling any other game.
-
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
wow requires a Quad Core, good job i have my Q6600
but that is pretty steep - i would say wait til RockStar say what the requirements are as they dont seem right -
They do seem a little off. I'm sure it is meant to say 8800GT/HD 3870 as the reccomended since that sounds right, and I do believe they got the CPU correct though. This game is clearly going to be optimized for multiple cores since the minimum requirement is a dual core CPU, and the recommended is a tri/quad core cPU.
I own this game for the Xbox360, bought it at release day, and yea it's really laggy. It also seems to run in a resolution even lower than the standard 1280x720 for the consoles, but is upscaled, and has 4xAA. This game looks increadibly blurry and low res on my 50" lcd, much worse than other x360 games. It's terribly laggy too, and from being a PC gamer since 1996 I can tell it's running an average of under 30fps, and in some spots the framerate actually drops in the lower teens.
If my setup can run this game in full 1920x1080 with 60FPS I think I'll finally be able to enjoy this game.. -
I stopped trusting system requirements 3 years ago. The ones posted don't make much sense, but even with the 8600 changed to 8800, I rather doubt it'll actually be that steep. For example, Mass Effect's recommended requirements were something like 7900GTX, but I have no trouble maxing it out on my 8600M GT with a 1280x800 screen. I think what they're trying to get across is that this game needs a decent CPU, but most laptops built with such games in mind should still run it (a 1.8 GHz C2D is not that much).
-
This seems ridiculous .. I don't think it's the official system requirement.. C'mon they would make big sells with those..

A 7900 GT is the minimum yet an 8600 GT is recommended? I've maintained in the past that PC game requirements have been getting further and further off from reality. I would bet that a single core Pentium-M 760 and a 256MB Geforce 6800 Ultra could run this game without any problems, although the resolution and details would have to be reduced. It'll look like a low quality version of Crysis, but it should still play and be smooth at low settings. That's what I would anticipate. If it really does require such high specs just to run in low quality smoothly, then someone didn't do enough optimization.
-
I have no doubt that these requirements are true. It is only a matter of time before Rockstar confirms it. Even gta.net has them displayed prominently. The first time I saw the minimum requirements I loled. That will make GTA 4 the most graphically intensive PC game ever. I would have been happy had this stupid company been taken over by EA. The PC was the platform where GTA was born. And now these same idiots treat PC gamers like second class customers and extreme disdain. Am really glad that San Andreas was my last GTA.
-
hi, will my notebook able to run this: c2d 1.6ghz 3gb ram 2600HD toshiba a200 thank you
gta4 official requirements, holy crap.
