Is there much of a difference gaming at 1080 or 2k?

It is very game dependent now. Most games do not use enough memory for 4GB to be an issue at 1080 res at all. Just some particular games heavily load onto memory making them use up to 6GB or sometimes more. At such points you might experience hiccups or slight performance hit since your GPU does not have the memory requirement. Nothing that a simple settings change can't handle, reducing the amount of VRAM required for the particular game.

But in general, depends on the game, and mostly only a couple of new games really do use a lot of memory haha.

It may also be worth noting that the smaller amount of VRAM usually indicates a soldered chip.

    970M: 3GB vs 6GB.
    980M: 4GB vs 8GB.

If you're in the market for a PC, upgradeability may be something for you to consider.

GTX 980M MXM exist only with 8GB, 4GB is soldered or custom board (not MXM).
GTX 970M MXM exist in both 3 and 6GB. 6GB is a must here for a growing number of games that require 4GB+

Not quite. That was true until this surfaced a few weeks ago.

MSI Global GT60 2QE Dominator Pro 4K Edition

4GB 980m. And unless MSI redesigned the 16f4 for this one laptop (highly unlikely) it's still an MXM GPU with u soldered CPU as well.

I personally would not be buying anything with less than 4gb vRam at this point, even for 1080p. Swing for the 6GB 970m or 8gb 980m. With the release of the latest consoles it seems developers have gotten sloppier with their memory usage and it probably won't get any better over the next couple years.

Oh, thats suprising. No shops anywhere sell 4GB 980Ms and you only find them on soldered notebooks or Asus G751. Strange. Oh well, guess 4GB MXM do exist then. But I dont think it will be widespread. Why go with 4GB when you can fit 4GB more on the PCB..
