It could be a problem with the disc. Try it in another computer and see if it works. If not, then you found your problem. In the mean time, I would suggest simply downloading HL2 through Steam.

Also, do a Windows Update and see if there are any Windows Installer packages you can update.

Steam is somewhat of a "game console" (hard to describe). You register all of your games (well im not sure if all, but for sure all the "source" games) and you can play online with them. Whats great is that you can downoad full games by installing the program, creating a log-in, registering your games, and then downloading. (of course you still have to buy it, becuse you need the serial)

Yup, those are diffrent versions of the game. Dont worry, all the files are neatly organized, you wont even know they exist (unless links appear, but you can always delete them :D ) yes counterstrike source is a game, its the newest of the Counter strike Line.

Halflife 2 is the single player game. HL2 Deathmatch is an online multiplayer game using the source engine, which is played with the HL2 weapons, charcters, and on many of the game maps that are redesigned a bit to be arena like. HL2 Lost Coast is a singe map that was made after HL2 but before HL2 EP1 to show off what the updated Source engine could do with HDR and other advancements. Counterstrike is like HL2 deathmatch but with new maps, weapons, and with terrorists and stuff. I personally think it sucks, but it is one of the most popluar online game of all time so it must float some people boats.

Did you try to play the games when you were connected to Steam online? It's tough to get them to work offline.
Also, is your hard drive light active when you double-click a game? It might be taking a long time to load or verify files.

Check that it's actualyl downloaded 100%. Sometimes Steam thinks a game is ready way before it actually is.

Also, the first time you play the game, it has to be online, as far as I can remember. Feel free to write a few hate mails to Steam about it. :)

I can't help but think you have a system problem. Have you had any problems with windoz-crashes? Can you run other games?

This game will run on my old 9600-64meg so your GPU looks OK.

Did your laptop come with restore disks?

What exactly happens when you try to start the game?
Are you connected to the internet when you try?
