as the title says along with the question if anyone still plays that online.

You need to have played HL2 in order to understand what is going on in Ep1, so get HL2. And HL2 is a single player FPS. HL2 Deathmatch and CS:S are online games, but those are like deathmatch/team deathmatches and don't have a storyline.
-
you really should get them both, and you won't regret it, but if you have to choose, i'd say start with HL2, since it's better and longer than episode 1, and like what Budding said, you won't understand the plot in Episode 1, unless you already played HL2.

Ep1 was a bit of a letdown for me. I played HL2 and got so into the game and then beat Ep1 after like 5-6 hours... At the very least, get HL2 and you may as well get Ep1 since the whole storyline's pretty cool.

Ep1, as the name suggests, is just an ep. It's not an entire game, it's more like one single chapter (its price reflects that as well). Ep2, the sequel to Ep1, is about to come out, and that is gonna rock with Portal.

Get Half Life 2.
Best game EVER in my opinion. -
You could just wait a little while (likely Q3 this year) and get Half-Life 2: Orange Box. It contains HL2, Ep1, Ep2, Portal and Team Fortress 2, and should retail for $60 (I'm assuming you're in the states). On the other hand, Ep1 is only $10, and comes with Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, Half-Life 2: Lost Coast and Half-Life Deathmatch: Source.

I'm not sure why you guys are saying "soon" and "little while" for Ep2.
It's not scheduled to come out until near Christmas. -

Sorry, I missed the parantheticals,
Yeah, it's got a tentative of Q3, but a lot of people think it might get pushed to Q4.
I'm hoping for Q3, too. Can't wait for portal and TF2!!
half life 2 or half life 2 episode 1
