Hey guys recently I just bought NBA2K9 from bestbuy for $20, and unfortunately my school network blocks Steam from running. Is there way to install the game from the DVD without steam?

I don't believe so, sorry. Can you access a different internet connection and do all the steam stuff? If you can, you can then use the game offline.

You would need to go out to a free wifi hotspot, say Mcdonalds, (If they are still even doing free?!) local library, or somewhere that you could get the internet that allows you to get on Steam then run it in offline mode from then on.

oh, too bad. :( Do I need it to install the game or just at the beginning when updating STEAM? So, afterwards I can play the game without worrying about having an internet connection? Actually, that's what I thought about doing going to a Mcdonalds or Burger King nearby if I had to. Man this sucks...

Afterwards, once in offline mode, yes you should be able to play without needing the internet. Too bad your school blocks Steam... You should ask the IT guys why they do it. I've never had much luck persuading any of them, but at my College enough people pestered the IT people and they finished putting up wireless over the entire campus, not just the main building. Who knows?

I just can't fathom an IT department blocking Steam. It's akin to forbidding XBOX Live.

yea guys, it sucks a lot. The school is pretty tough here, they want us to really focus, I mean REALLY focus on academics. I can't even stay on a game related site for over 30 minutes without being reported. During the day, the school firewall blocks all game related sites too. Only after 6pm then I'm allowed to get on sites like Gamespot, and steam. I've emailed the IT guy's in the hopes of letting it be allowed but so far no response.

omg. i feel sorry for u.
you're not the only one. at my halls(dorms), they imposed a 5gb/day download limit, anyone who go over the limit would get banned. first timers would get a one day ban, second time it's a week, third time it's the whole academic year.
the ridiculus thing is, they say it's for preventing piracy, it's quite obvious it's just a 'fair' usage policy.

Ah, screw the lot of you! ._.

It's like complaining that your burger isn't big enough in front of a starving ethiopian kid (that'd be me).

    *rolls up sleeves*

150Mb per week, maximum of 30Mb per day, and this is at a private school chargin $6-10k per year.

Welcome to Australia (more importantly, welcome to Tasmania lol)

At least they don't block Steam at your schools. I forgot to mention that they also block X-box live here. They just don't want games to hog up all the school bandwidth. Also download speeds are really slow, max is 45kb/s. Most of time during the day when everyone's on, I get 9-12kb/s max. And if the school firewall sees someone downloading over 10mb it will stop the download. Looks like, i'll be heading to a Mcdonald's soon. lol

Too bad, I left the free-wifi connection at the fast food restaurant. Looks like I'll have to wait until next time. :(
