I can't seem to figure out what you are trying to say,
You bought a VGA cable to try connect S-Video to VGA?
Your TV has a a VGA connection ONLY?
You tried to connect VGA-VGA on your desktop to TV and it works?
You then tried S-Video of a 4870 to the TV? how?

Post a picture of what you are trying to connect.

Did you say it works with the Desktop? (would mean its not a faulty product you bought).

    If so, try this;
Goto Windows Mobility Centre (found by left clicking the battery icon near clock)

Now have cable unplugged, TV off
plug cable into laptop, turn TV on

go back to the WMC and under External Display click on "connect display"
now the laptop should scan for any new attached hardware i.e. the TV.

Such an adapter cable, for example:
    - VGA - S-VHS
    - VGA - SCART

..has to be supported by the graphics card. Now, I don't now EXACTLY why this is, but it seems to have something to do with how the pins are connected internally.

I work in a store where we sell computers etcetera and we get this question quite often. We also ordered different VGA - SCART adapter cables, but none of them work.

Just did a search on some of the cables
seems you need to set the laptops display to 640x480 <--- "MANUALLY" any higher and the TV doesn't get detected as thats the highest signal a S-Video can detect apparently.
Give that a try, hope it works ;)
