just received a hpdv7 quad, whats the best driver out there currently for the gpu, it came with 295.55? it is a 2gb ddr5 card. i have been reading how to overclock this one but it seems complicated, any easier ways to do it or guides? also when gaming on bf3 custom setting im getting around 30 or so fps and 88c max temp, is this normal?

thats what i am not sure about is forcing the pstate, no idea where to find what i need, its been awhile since my last laptop i gamed on and oc'd. i tried nvidia inspector and it showed the core changed but it made no difference when i ran 3dmark11.

at the moment its with no changes so whatever the stock clocks are? i have seen different clocks listed for the same card, i was messing around and put the core at 1000 and mem at 2000 and applied, it showed the change on the msi program i had going but never showed higher than a 835 for the core and didnt seem to make any difference. the mem also wont go over 2000 im guessing until i do the mod you have on your guide? or do i need to do that to adjust both? at the end of 3dmark11 it shows core 405mhz and mem 2000mhz with a score of about 2300.

Your 3DMark11 score is correct for a stock clock speed Geforce GT 650M, but it does indeed appear that the GPU is ignoring the new clock settings. Are you using the latest version of Afterburner?

EDIT: I would also advise for a thermal repaste as well. If you're already getting 88C on the stock clocks, that will not leave much headroom for overclocking.

is the thermal paste something i can do myself? it showed max temp 88c after about 2 hours onf bf3, im playing it on a acer 22" 1080p monitor if that makes a difference? i also have the back raised up about an inch while it is sitting there. i used nvidia inspector because msi afterburner would only let the core go to 405 and no higher. what are the stock clocks for this card? each program i use shows different numbers.

You should be able to do it if you can find a manual online on how to disassemble your particular HP.

88 is kinda high though (monitor doesn't make a difference)

what temp difference should one see when using the thermal paste? the temp has me a bit worried when i have been reading about people overclocking and not getting much over 60c. is it maybe the hp design?

It might lower your temps, but since it's an HP (crap paste), a reapplication of IC diamond should shave at least 8-10c in load temps

HP is known for bad thermal design

ok thanks for the tips, i will look into re thermal pasting it. any other ideas about the overclocking? tonight i will install a new driver and go from there. how hard is it to force pstate? im not to computer savvy when it comes to files and whatnot im not sure where to even look.

Thermal paste it(PK-1 !!!!) and some Cosmos copper heatsinks, and you've got yourself some good overclocking headroom.... Forcing psate is a simple .bat file with a single line of nvidiaInspector launch parameters.

weird, i used nvidia inspector again and put the clocks at 1100 core 2000 mem, it shows this at the end of 3dmark11 but my score is still 2297? max 62C on 3dmark for a temp, also while playing bf3 it was only up around 65 after an hour, i have no idea whats different today with it. even when adjusted, on gpu shark it says true current clock speeds 835/2000.

If you're following Mobius One's guide, make sure you are forcing the GPU in the right state (P5 I believe is what works for HP/Dell GT 650M GDDR5's). It looks like your GPU is going into P0 state and ignoring your P5 state. If you've created a shortcut from Inspector, you will need to have this flag:

    -forcepstate:0,5

...These things are getting too complicated. I remember just having to open ATiTools, move the sliders up and down and hit Apply for my Radeon 9800 Pro.

Yes, that flag will force you into the state that allows you to adjust your core/memory clock freely. Without it, you can only change the offset value for Dynamic Boost (Maximum +135 MHz?). Ideally you would need to create two shortcuts in order to switch to the desired mode easily -- one for locking it in overclocking speeds, and one to put it back to P8 or idle state.

I highly recommend looking through Mobius One's guide. I followed it and was able to get 3DMark11 at P3167 with 1200 MHz core and 2500 MHz memory.

might i suggest that you also download the nvidiainspector? it will help you optimize what GPU is being used for certain games, especially ones that dont recognize the 650m right off the bat (Shogun 2: Total War).

If someone hasn't help you already in the next 5-6 hours, I can give you my shortcut target flags for my detuned profiles so at least you have a starting place.

One thing I wanted to point out too was that if you are keeping your notebook primarily plugged in, my P5 locked state GPU is only running 3-4C hotter than the default idle state when not gaming so the fan noise hasn't increased in normal usage. If you are running it off battery too, then yes, you definitely need a shortcut to break it out of P5 since those elevated clock speeds will increase power consumption.

Since we know your current driver is working properly, I would leave it alone for the time being to avoid complications to overclocking.

With nVidia Inspector open, click on the 'Show Overclock' tab. Click on the 'Create Clocks Shortcut' button.

    1.jpg

This will create a shortcut on your desktop. Right-click on it and select 'Properties':

    2.jpg

Under the Shortcut tab, there is a text field labeled 'Target'. go to the very end, add a space after the '.exe', and add the following and changed the variables accordingly:

    3.jpg

(NOTE: These flags are proven to work only for HP/Dell GT 650M)

    Code:
    [B]-forcepstate:0,5 -setGpuClock:0,1,[COLOR="#0000FF"]X[/COLOR] -setMemoryClockOffset:0,0,[COLOR="#FF0000"]Y[/COLOR][/B]
Substitute X for your desired core clock speed. Substitute Y for your desired memory clock speed offset.

i.e. For example, your GT 650M is clocked at 745 MHz core and 2000 MHz memory, and you want to overclock the core to 850 and 2200 MHz memory, so you would use:

    Code:
    -forcepstate:0,5 -setGpuClock:0,1,850 -setMemoryClockOffset:0,0,200
Change X to exactly what you want. For Y, we would put in 200 even though you want 2200 because the base clock is already at 2000 MHz, so you would need to enter the difference.

Your Target text field box should look something like this:

    4.jpg

Click on OK after you are finished, and open the shortcut like an application. It will not show/do anything, but if the flags are entered correctly, GPU-z or nVidia Inspector can be used to validate the change:

    5.jpg

Note: For some reason my correct memory clock shows up in the GPU clock and not Current clock like the core. Wonder if anyone else noticed this?

    "C:\Users\HP\Downloads\nvidiaInspector (1)\nvidiaInspector.exe" -forcepstate:0,5 -setGpuClock:0,1,850 -setMemoryClockOffset:0,0,200

it seems to be only changing the core, i put 400 in the target and it shows 800 on nvidia inspector for the memory? the p2 comes up first but is grayed out and there is a p0 and a p1. 3dmark shows my core at 950 and mem at 2000, but my score was 200 less then the usual 2300 or so.

Sounds good. It's interesting to see what it can do, but I ultimately left mine stock as well. I figure if I need more performance, I'll build a desktop for the more extreme games.

From what you're telling me, you're getting close but it seems you just can't get it locked in the right p-state. If you want to give it one more go, I would try this:

    Code:
    -forcepstate:0,1 -setGpuClock:0,1,1000 -setMemoryClockOffset:0,0,200

its like something is locked it will not let the mem go over 2000 at all using the force pstate or nvidia inspector.

I've read through this just now. I have a dv6 and I think my flags will work with your laptop too.

I've attached my overclock and default states. OC is currently at 1150mhz core and 2850 memory. Default just gets you back to dynamic boost. I use it when I play older non-demanding games. Just change it as you please. :)

Note, though, that I don't use the P5 state. Weird that mine is an HP and I can't use the P5 thing--I just used the default P2 state for this.

    Default clock settings:
    Code:
    nvidiaInspector.exe -forcepstate:0,16
    Overclock:
    Code:
    nvidiaInspector.exe -setBaseClockOffset:0,0,165 -setMemoryClockOffset:0,0,800 -setpowertarget:0,100 -setVoltageOffset:0,0,0 -setGpuClock:0,2,[B]1150[/B] -setMemoryClock:0,2,[B]2850[/B] -forcepstate:0,2
I think you can make do without the tags other than the forcepstate, setmemoryclock and setgpuclock but I'm leaving it there anyways. Also, I made a shortcut and used ctrl+num1 and num3 for the defaults and overclock settings, respectively. I use MSI Afterburner to see if it works, as well as nvidiaInspector itself. Memory boosts up to 2850 (I can go 2900, but it sometimes BSODs.) I get 3150 3dmarks in 2011 with that setting.
