There is no reason for a laptop to have a video card that is capable of displaying higher resolution than the display screen. These cards get hot use a lot of power and most people will never use an external monitor. They only make since as an option for people with a lot of money.

Even the most basic video cards are capable of displaying a resolution higher than the native resolution of the screen of any laptop I can think of right now.

Also, all recent graphics cards have power saving capabilities so that they don't consume high amounts of power when they don't need to.

Many people connect their laptops to their TVs to watch movies or play games. In addition, most integrated graphics are capable to displaying higher resolution than the display screen.

Not to mention this highly simplifies the production and distribution, the confusion of buying, said video cards my making them compatible with any resolution.

thats a really stupid thing to say. a powerful card is gonna be able to do higher resolutions than the screen can, but you need that power to put games like crysis on high settings with the native resolution.

Much of the "extra" video processing hardware is a direct result of 3D needs. Outputting a desktop to beyond 1080p is extremely easy, and really old hardware can do it no sweat.

Face it kiddo, there's a niche for these bigger and faster laptops. Each one to his own, no matter how few the the people are who prefer them. It's the discretion of those companies who make them to continue building and selling these things, and from what we can see, there are still people who buy them. If no one was buying them, why the heck would they even keep on selling them in the first place? FYI, in CES 2009 (it's an industry-known large electronics expo, if you don't know), ATI unveiled their new powerhouse Mobility Radeon HD 4870 cards. Nvidia also released some new low-end and mid-range mobile graphics processors, the GT105M, GT110M, and GT130M. There's obviously a demand for graphics in the mobile sector, even the big-, 'overly power hungry' (but by no means not efficient) GPUs.

And duh, we can connect it to external monitors. Sucks though many laptops don't have more than 1 output for multiple external monitors. Then again, we have other peripherals for those anyways. It's good for mobile workstations such as the Lenovo Thinkpad W700s (the pop-up 10" monitor may not be enough for power-users).

Who the hell ever said they were 'efficient'?

    Oh wait... it's Intel.
