yes F.R.A.P.S, xfire has a FPS counter feature, and also the Teamspeak Overlay.

Also some games have theyr own FPS counter.

For CallofDuty games you can display the FPS counter by opening up the console while in game by pressing the "`" tilde key and typing /cg_drawfps 1 to turn it on and /cg_drawfps 0 to turn it off. It works for cod4 in mp and sp but for world at war it only work in sp until the next patch.

Fraps is accurate, The Xfire in game overlay isn't so accurate in some games. In games like Left 4 dead, Xfire's FPS counter will display between 360-650fps when I'm only getting 120-220fps. And on COD4 it sometimes shows 200+fps when I'm actually getting 55-60fps at times. Fraps is always correct though.

Fraps also has the capability to LOG your framerate to disk, it will create a file that shows the min, max and average framerate of what you logged if that's what your looking for.

I would recommend using RivaTuner, as it can show both FPS and GPU temps ingame (and many other stats)

RivaTuner is the great for FPS monitoring and even better since it monitors the GPU temps while in-game. :D

FYI, RivaTuner uses less resources than FRAPs. ;)

Good choice on FRAPS. A word of warning though: F9-F12 are all hotkeys for FRAPS functions. Check if your games also use those keys (e.g.quicksave/quickload) and remap the hotkeys as needed.

I forgot about this while playing Bioshock and wondered why my FPS was locked at 30. I also wondered why my hard drive space dropped by 16 GB.

if the frames are sufficiently low, you can literally count frames per second with your watch, the same way you count heart beats per minute. count the frames that occur in a certain number of seconds. divide.

the software does the same thing.

I was getting my butt kicked because the frames were too low to hit splicers with my pistol, so no good vids unfortunately.

I actually take a video of the game i'm playing, then slow it down so much that i can literally count the frames as they come by.
    VERY accurate.

and ~100 fps on FarCry 1 at same res :D

I'm gonna test some more games :)
