My friend burned his purchased HDVD and we tried playing it on my computer.I don't have a high end graphics card and my computer's operating system would crash and the monitor screen turns black. I can't play the HD high resolution movies because my computer can't handle it. Is it possible to change it to a lower resolution (DVD resolution), which would allow me to play the movie? Is there a software tool out there?

The simple answer for now is no. I have not read of any methods to reading HD DVD/Blu Ray discs on a DVD drive. I suspect that since the encryption(s) have been cracked you could legitimately do this in the future for high-def discs you own.
