Are we sure there's 4 acts?

I wouldn't expect it to be particularly longer than D2, maybe slightly less, but with much more to do outside of the main campaign.

There are 4 acts and 4 difficulties.
It will be too difficult to predict how long the game will be considering that we have only managed to capture a glimpse of the whole game. As a diablo player/fan i would say that from lvl 1-60 is just the tutorial, and the true game will start at inferno mode. So far none of the hardcore developers team have managed to clear inferno mode so i will guess that this game is gonna last a long long time. At least it will last me till titan gets released :)

Do remember that D2 is still pretty much alive now even though the game was released around 12 years ago!

About the developers not clearing inferno I believe that's just a gimmick for advertising :p I mean why would they release the game if they wouldn't be able to test it under normal characters without GM powers.

I think some one said its 6-8 hours just plowing through the normal mode
and 15+ hours if you play thoroughly.

And if it stays true to it's form the dungeons should be randomized if you decide to restart the game.

I dont believe in developers not being to go through inferno as well. I mean how do they know that its doable if they didnt do it?

Yeah the dungeons are all randomized with even random events happening, so you will not be able to completely explore the game with just one playthrough :)

Regarding the inferno difficulty, all monsters in inferno are at least lvl 61 whereas character lvl is max 60.
Btw i should rephrase develops not being able to complete it. "The developers put together a bunch of hardcore gamers and put them to the test against inferno difficulty and they have yet completed it under normal circumstances" :)

i really hope not...after over 10 years of waiting, 15 hrs would be a bit underwelming.

I'm sure there will be future expansions though, so D3 will go for a long time

Thats true although I still think its a bit short.

But anyways, more time to play through all the characters then. And play all the difficulties, included Inferno which I MUST play now that Blizzard said it was ultra hard. That was a "challenge accepted" from me the moment I heard it. lol :p

Plus we have the online play

Completing the game on each difficult depends on the other players you are playing with and what type of char they are using.

If you get a group of elite players with the best items with a balance char type (tankers, healers, ranger, magic, power), they will complete each level in a matter of minutes.

Remember d2 power rush your char to 99. It's not hard. Every diablo game had people rushing up the ladder to be the first lvl99 char. The same is going to happen in D3.

Some players are elite and will complete any game they play the first day.

Probably not until AMD releases a CAP for it. You shouldn't need crossfire to run it though. I played beta maxed out 1080p on my 6970m and my gpu never went above 60% load.

D2's longevity rested in 1) baalrun leveling grind, 2) MF runs, 3) making new and interesting builds, 4) pvp, and 5) ladder resets.

D3 won't have 1), won't have 5), it'll be expanded upon 2) via Inferno difficulty, it'll be greatly reduced in 3) due to free respec, and not much can be said about 4) yet since its pvp approach doesn't seem to be finalized yet. Also D3 will have 6) which is annual expansions, I bet.

My prediction is that D3'll be more action-packed but hold a bit less longevity than D2.

This site seems pretty interesting. Average gametime to beat Diablo 2 was 32 hours and 46 minutes. Just doing the main story and nothing else was average 24 hours. Completionists used 188 hours in average lol

D3 wont last as long as D2 I do not think by any means.

If anything games dont hold gamers as long as they used to in general since there are more games out in shorter time so there is more stuff to move onto.

Guess the remedy will be premium DLC galore (Please don't) or maybe a standalone expansion like with Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm?

Yup that's the biggest reason and as was followed up by the next poster the developer and publisher offset their cost even further with DLC. In fact a lot of games are much shorter now due to DLC because it allows the dev and pub to double and triple dip sales.

Blizzard won't resort to DLCs for Diablo III, as far as I know. It used annual expansions to great effect in World of Warcraft, and I'm 100% certain that will again be the case with D3 (notice how it also has a level cap of only 60, instead of 99 from Diablo 2, and was promised "you will reach level cap MUCH faster and most game content is at endgame" - the structure of the game is identical to World of Warcraft). Expect annual expacs with level cap raises, new line of gears, and new bosses/Acts.

A shame really, but it'll bring em maximum profits so why the heck wouldn't they commit to this system.

I'm guessing that the game should take more than 50 hours to finish. Four acts, four difficulties, the exp required to go to next level skyrockets at level 49-50.

    Diablo 3 Boss Spoilers below.
    Bosses:
    Act 1: The Butcher
    Act 2: Belial
    Act 3: Asmodeun
    Act 4: Diablo

How long D3 last depends if people are making enough money off the AH to feed themselves and keep playing it.

which ultimately depends on if Blizz can control all the bot and the big traders(? not sure how to describe them but those who control the game economy)

Blizzard loves to make their games last, so I would not worry to much about it. Being sucked in it, never to surface again, that is the real concern. Ask any WoW player :D

I decided to cancel my Amazon order just because I don't want to wait. I even had a CE with release day delivery, but they normally don't deliver until 3PM or so.

Instead I am going to get up early on Tuesday and go to Walmart, if they have the CE then I will get it, otherwise I will just get the regular. I will be playing by like 7AM, can't wait.

The comparison between the sorc and wizard forgets 20x levels of each without items from the sorc in D2.

If you think there is isn't a difference between level 1 firewall and level 20 firewall, you have forgotten.

Note that every level 60 wizard is exactly the same as every other 60th wizard save equipment. (or you can change to cookie cutter build X in a second or two)

I also agree that Blizzard will release at least one expansion. They kind of have to...

At one point everyone will have a 60th level of every class and maxed out.
Some people will be done with this in a month.

Something more like specialization will have to be added for advanced players or D3 will not enjoy D2 agelessness. (I still play D2 from time to time)

To me, the difference in levels of a skill isn't the customization because people would max the skills that are required to make it stronger. The runes in D3 make the skills have more variety, somewhat. You would choose which one to have the utmost effect, unlike in D2, you would max warmth for a stronger enchant.

Respeccing will be good, especially for HC players.

I played HC primarily and the grind through every hero death was painful, especially when testing builds.

Ya, but the level increases just increased the damage, radius, and mana costs. A lvl 20 firewall was just a lot stronger than Lvl 1. The runes actually change the spell somewhat.

Exactly, D2 skills isn't as great of a representation as D3 skills are. I'm pretty sure there will be more skill builds in D3 as well than in D2.
