Lately games have been coming out like crysis 3 that look the same, well almost. What I mean to say is Low looks good enough for me and 720p is fine.

How many years of gaming will I get with this type of preferance?

485m is just as fast as the 675m when clocked to the same speed which is easy. so yeah its fine, I run bf3 on medium at 1080p above 60fps all day long.

My 650M is still going strong at 768p so you'll be fine as the 485M is a fair bit faster than mine.

If you want to play in 720p, I think it will last even longer than another 2 years. But even if your OK with 720p, I'll stil suggest to rather keep the game at native resolution and tune down som of the graphic settings.

The advantage you have is the 256-bit bus. It shouldn't lose a whole lot of performance at 1080p compared with 720p if you dial the settings down due to the wide bust, er, bus.

lol typos are great are they not?

Im aware of the bust size, however my framerates do go up in 3d 720p vs 1080p,,not by much but say 2-10fps. 21fps isn't playable but 25fps is, know what I mean.

I was thinking of buying a laptop a few months ago with the intergrated graphics and they score like 4000gpu in vantage I wonder how long it will be till igfx matches the 6990m, knowing that answer will give me a better idea of longevity

I am having some flashbacks regarding 720p vs 1080p and a certain HD6990m GPU.... nissan! haha.

485m should last more than two years even if you don't care about settings as long as it plays. A small OC will keep you in the game for a while.

The 485M is just now to the point where it's having to run the most demanding games on High, instead of Ultra, and this is at 1080p. It's not even close to being forced to lower the resolution yet. Heck the answer would be "2 years" if you were asking about 1600x900.

720p and Low settings is like 4 more years.

I am curious because the ps4 will be launched soon and wonder how it will affect game requirements

Not sure it matters much if you can always ratchet the resolution down to 720...

Depends on how scalable the games are too.

The point gets down to what are you comfortable with? If you are OK dropping resolution down and settings down for significantly playable framerates then it will last as long as you can tolerate it. It's personal preference. I'm sure a 9800m GT from 2008 will suffice just fine at 720p at low to medium settings if it doesn't bother you.

My issue is over time, other technology improves in other areas of the laptop as well like screens, ports, storage, etc that a new laptop can improve in all areas significantly. And it becomes kind of a factor when the latest low end GPU's can out perform your once top end tech and do it while consuming 1/3 the power and in a thin and light.

I'd say within the next two iterations (about two years) of the common 45W CPU IGP's (not the beast like the GT3e) it will exceed performance of the 485m at 720p and come close at 1080p.

I vowed to never post something useless. sorry

HT I have been here for 8 years and always look forward to your posts. kudos for having good genetics and being simply put smart.

It's a scary but exciting thought having intel Igpus scoring 4k in 3dmark11. So many people these days own laptops and only a few are privy to the best technology, once Igpus score 4k and they be able to play games 2012 and back and will all be playable. myriads of games. the average user will be able play crysis 3 at 1080p and high settings and many others, this will cause a stir people with 500 dollar laptops will have the power to enjoy every game in existance and the end result will be pc gaming will boom. literally

the coming games will have higher texture and more complex tessellation etc that require powerful computing power. even low resolution. just like 8800gtx can run 1080p games at it's time but not the new gerneration games.

Would be interesting to know when the Igpu starts outperforming the new gen consoles :p (at least on paper).

Also my old asus G73 jh (5870 m slightly OC and i7 720 QM) says hi! I am still having a blast with the machine and I can play games at 1080p on high settings still (no AA though and not ultra :p). Then again I do not demand 60 fps in my games. I prefer consistency and that is why sometimes I limit the framerate.

Yeah same with my 5850m clocked to 900/1090 and i7 720 QM stock plays new games just fine at 1080p high settings. Not crysis 3 and a few other performance hoggers, but like 95% of em still runs on high :D
