I realize that it shows your frame rate. Fraps is more renowned as a program for capturing gameplay that for just showing fps. Yes, there are other alternatives such as Camtasia or Xfire that can capture gameplay as well, however fraps is effectively the de facto gameplay caputring software.

I merely found it curious that the OP has used fraps, yet was unaware of all it's features.

I tried using CamStudio to record game footage, but when I looked back at the footage it didn't show up; it only recorded the desktop while I was playing.

With Fraps, be aware that you have to pay for the program to record past a certain time. I believe the trial only lets you record 30 seconds at a time. And I thought Wegame required payment to record in 1080 HD, but I might be wrong. Otherwise, it is free.

I personally use Xfire, which is also free. However, the .avi codec it uses sometimes doesn't play nicely with Windows Movie Maker if you plan on editing it. Other, paid programs might be fine with it.

I personally use WeGame. It does require a premium membership to record in full HD (native resolution) quality, but the free version still lets you record at half-resolution with sound and with no time limit. It's a very negligible hit on performance compared to Fraps as well, and with significantly smaller output file sizes while maintaining decent quality.

My only complaint about WeGame so far is that its integrated video uploading system has never worked, but it doesn't matter because I usually just import the raw video into Windows Movie Maker and put it on Youtube from there anyway. Another issue is that WeGame and the Mumble in-game overlay are incompatible with each other, but I just disable the Mumble overlay and it's all cream gravy.

Whatever you record video with, if you have a USB3 or eSATA port I would highly recommend getting an external drive and recording the video to that. Recording video to the same drive the game is playing off of is not great for performance of the game or the video recording. Or make sure you're running the game off your SSD and recording to your 500GB drive at least.
