id recommend just buying a good desktop for about $1500, which would easily get the settings that you want, and then buy a notebook that suits your non-gaming needs.

I second this. Unless you plan to frequent many LAN parties or such, it would be much more worth it to buy/build a gaming desktop, which, in the end, can outperform a gaming laptop by quite a margin. Then, with the remaining money you saved, get a fairly good portable laptop when you need portability and possibly some light gaming.

Watch DIY ViDock thread. There is a sub-project looking to extend a notebook's MXM port to an external Desktop video card. More likely to way get 60Fps that way without paying crazy money.

Not to mention the fact that you can much more easily (and cheaply) upgrade a desktop to keep up with future games.

I manage 30-40 fps 1920x1200 Crysis tweaked to look really high on my notebook. You see tweaking can do a lot. Just look here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s62lybcpt54.

But you are better off with a desktop, the M17x is nothing to write home about, basically 9800GTX desktop GPU´s in that notebook when you can get a GTX 295 or even two in SLI that crushes that laptop like rubble far more cheap along with an I7 Quad Core.. Damn a GTX 260 GPU alone since I own one myself is very good.

Get the GT200 core GPU´s or the ATI 4850 and up desktop versions instead.

But of course if you are willing to churn out money get the M17x then.

    TL;DR.

$2,000 can get you the fastest desktop money can buy. If you want to play Crysis, just get a gaming grade notebook. If you want to play Crysis maxed out, go with a desktop.

It depends on the game. Crysis is one of the few that (I think) looks good even down at 20-25fps, and my desktop is certainly capable of much more than that.

But there are definitely games where that difference matters.

It's kinda weird, the human eye refreshes at 23 fps, but some games running at 25 or so fps seem choppy compared to 40 or higher. Technically we shouldn't be able to tell though...

It looks choppy because it's not necessarily in sync with your eye.

It depends on how much post-processing there is in the game. If the game has lots of pretty effects and motion blur, it will be difficult to notice the difference between 60fps and 30fps. Take that all away and the difference will be noticable.

I'd suggest buying a $2000 gaming desktop and then buying a $2000 gaming laptop. you will get great settings on crysis on the laptop and be able to max out the desktop, so you can play on the go and at home.

What? The response of the human eye is not measure in fps, and we see can see far more than 23 fps.

yeah, I agree, just because movies commonly are shot around 24fps doesnt mean that is how fast the eye can see.

I can easily tell the difference between 30 and 60fps. Not so much with non-interactive stuff (movies), but when you are interacting (playing a game), well, 1/30th of a second is a looong time to have to wait for visual feedback of what you've just done.

At this point, yes. If you'd rather save some money but still have a great gaming experience, check out the Asus W90 with dual HD4870's. I also strongly agree with those before me who suggested getting a nice gaming desktop for $1500-$2000 in addition to a laptop.

no, our eyes are slow. they just arent in sync with the tv so the tv has to be much faster in order for it to be smooth.

I dont think its necessary for crysis to be 60 fps though, just fast action movies. 35-40 should play very nice.

I would get a W90vp with dual 4870s or M17 with dual 4850s for $2000 and then get a nice desktop. The 4870s/4850s will rape Crysis, especially if dont mind playing at lower resolutions.

    Are you sure?

    http://www.sagernotebook.com/product_customed.php?pid=188463

I want sli with an i-7 on a raid 5 SSD.. and I will sit with my HDX until it comes out..

I like the Dell or Alienware.. except for the heat seems to be ans issue when you double up? or so I have heard from a few owners.

Not many people have a love for laptops that would drive them to the edge of perfection. Most of the "Real" computer guys are into towers strictly it would seem.

User upgradable is what I am searching for.. so that mving forward I can pop out the chip.. or video card.. just like ram..

That would be fun to tinker with... keeping it running would note worthy let alone up and playing..

Sorry so long winded.. to be clear I like you rig and I like thier rig..

I think my HDX runs coller than both though.. (once again a joke)

    Be well, JW

I just checked it out you can get a Alienware 17x add the Dual NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 280M, 2GB – SLI® option and 1920X1200 screen all for $2549 which should play anygame you have, for $200 dollars more you can get the Intel® Core™2 Duo T9600 2.8GHz (6MB Cache, ), Not only that there are still tons of upgrades for it, if you notice the Alienware is bulky which is good for cooling, plus they are the best looking laptop by far, and totally mobile. Its your money but for 2500 dollars you should be good for a long time. Happy hunting!

I would recommend the W90 over the M17X if it was still at $2400 or less like it was but now that they do not make them anymore currently the price has gone up on the remaining units.

The M17X's dual GTX280's are almost identical to the power of the 4870's in the W90 but in the past the W90 was costing less and getting consistently higher overclocks with the cpu's as well. So it was winning in two fronts.

The M17X however I have seen now with a much reduced price in certain package configurations and the W90 has grown in price so I can definitely recommend the M17X.

However keep in mind the Sager 9850 its identical to the M17X but with a few minor differences.

Crysis in particular is not the most fair game to compare the W90 with since it has always been heavily in favor of Nvidia cards, but despite that the W90 is right on the tail of the M17X, and the new drivers boast a 15% gain that we have not figured out how to install them yet. After those drivers the W90 may beat the M17X :D even in a nvidia favored game.

The Sager might be the fastest 18.4" laptop like it says on the advertisement with Dual Nvidia GeForce GTX 280M Graphics with 1GB DDR3 Video Memory in SLI Mode, The Alienware is 17" with 2 gigs(the only difference between these two) on the same video card....both are very good laptops

They are the same card, both of them have 1GB on each card.

When your in SLI the computer can only see/use 1GB of ram even though you have 2GB total because how the cards have to share the work load when linked.

The 9280 is the most powerfull workstation with the I7 but it only has a SINGLE GTX 280 not dual.

You have to make a choice.

More CPU power or more GPU power, if your goal is gaming go for GPU, if your goal is processing/encoding go with CPU.

    9280 - I7 & single GTX280
    M17X & 9850 - Mobile CPU & dual GTX280
    W90 - Mobile CPU & dual 4870

No doubt right now for the most gaming power, the M17X maxed out is the way to go.
The W90 is close but not close enough.

As others have said, buy a desktop, I spent about $1200 CAD and my computer can max Crysis with 2xAA at 1920x1200, and it never runs below 28fps.

And then the other money could be put toward a really great gaming laptop, you only need about $2500ish to get the best.
