Hello there!
I bought an Asus notebook with the i7 2630QM 2.0Ghz (2.9 turboboost) and an nVidia GT555m.
When I game with CPU intensive games such as Crysis 2, my CPU temperature rises up to 96ºC max and throttles. I'm getting worried about it, is this normal for an i7 notebook CPU?? My GPU on the other hand, remais stable at around 70ºC
What kind of CPU temp do you guys get then playing those kind of games (bf3, crysis 2, etc..) on the 2º gen i7s?
Should I be concerned about my CPU temperature?
Regards.

The Sandy Bridge i7s do get hotter than their 1st gen counter parts, but mid 90s is excessive [as another example my 2630QM gets into the mid 80s at times]. Maybe look into external laptop coolers to help.
Good luck -

I also can hit the mid 80s, but that's with intel xtu adjusted specs and while running a stress test.
You should look into your temps. -
The thing is, that when it reaches 96ºC with turboboost at 2.8Ghz, it downclocks itself to 2.2Ghz (there is still a little turboboost) and gets back to an average max temperature of ~86ºC.
Is this how this processor works? It will turoboost towards its max reachable temperature to then adjust the clock to a "safe" operating temp? -
Is 85-90ºC an okay operating temperature when gaming for this CPU?
-
No,it's not okay, 85-90 C is too high for long term use, and you lose lots of performance too when it throttles.
My 2630qm peaks around 70 C, no matter what I do, gaming, benchmarking, rendering, video encoding whatever. You should consider giving your CPU a repaste with some quality thermal paste, a proper repaste should substantially lower its temp. -
The Tj of the SNB i7s is at 100C, anything below that is technically "safe". However, 85-90C is still quite hot for a CPU, first make certain your heatsink clean before even considering a repaste. The CPU should not throttle itself below 100C, but there might be other safeguards in place in your particular laptop.
EDIT: Obviously, the m17x will run cooler due to better overall cooling and a dedicated fan for the CPU. The OP should aim at keeping his below 80C and call it a day imo. -
seems very very high, my i7 Q740 hits maximum 65 degrees under crysis 1

Anything above 88 is something you need to look at. Repaste your GPU!
Edit*
Holy crap, CPU? Yeah. Add some paste! -
I returned the laptoo... got the msi GT780 instead.
Stress testing right now prime95+furmark and never goes above 80C -
My i7 2630QM CPU never goes beyond 68C, even after playing Skyrim or GTA IV for hours.
