ok so.. been along time since i have had the time to do some gaming (busy with school and what not) but my old favorite game my brother stole when he moved lol (Neverwinter nights)

Can anyone please help to recommend a game similar to this?? i know there are games such as diablo / diablo 2 / guildwars / wow but i am on the hunt for a game where the caster classes (mages) have a very diverse set of spells they can mix and match.. i know that in both diablo 2 and guildwars there are only a specific number of spells, and honestly WoW i cant play... i will NOT pay for that game lol too addicting...

Anyone have an ideas for me?

Thanks for all the help, sorry if my request was a horrible one lol

Uhhhh. Are you looking for a hack-and-slash action game like Diablo, except with a greater variety of spells? Then Titan's Quest might float your boat. Or Sacred 2, but I haven't tried that one out yet.

Now, if it's an RPG you're looking for, then your options are probably more varied. ... I think.

Hmmmmmmmmmm. A little old by now, but Baldur's Gate is a always an old favourite. Neverwinter Nights 2 might do it, since you liked NWN. And of course, Planescape: Torment has a storyline to die for...

I don't know where you pulled that info from. While in Diablo 2 there are only about 20 different mage spells, in Guildwars if you get all the expansions and add-ons I believe the mage class has something like 100+ skills. Also other classes can use other classes skills as a secondary skill, so technically the mages have access to around 1000 skills.

Guild Wars is really fun. The only thing about those 1000+ skills is that you can onlyhave 8 at one time on the action bar! lol.

Dungeon Siege (and Dungeon Siege 2) sounds like what you're looking for. Very similar to NWN, just with a larger party.

Diablo 2 is a suggestion, but the gameplay is rather radically different so that may be a put off.

Neverwinter Nights 2 is always a good suggestion. Its campaign and stuff is extremely long too so you would get alot of bang for your buck.

Dungeon Siege 2 which was mentioned above, IMO, doesn't really offer much spell diversity. Also, its gameplay is extremely linear and in short, really different from classic DnD playstyles.

You best bet, I'd think, is probably just NWN2 or any game that is heavily based off of DnD since any other games have radically different gameplay or have a rather small selection of spells in terms of effects.

so theres lots of great stuff for me to look at now :) thanks everyone

As a reply to the post about GW and 1000+ spells, yes there are access to many MANY spells, but as posted, you can only use 8 of them at any one time (and of the 8, 1 is a resurect, and 1 is a heal, and 1 is a mana saving spell) so really your not down to 5 ... in NWN the wizard class i love because you dont have to specialize in one a few massively powerfull skills (sorceress class specialized but doesnt have the diversity). Its the diversity im looking for :)

Maybe ill try NWN 2 :) are there expansions for it already also? like i said, its been a long time lol

Neverwinter Nights 2 has 2 expansions: The Mask of the Betrayer (for epic level characters, I heavily recommend it) and Storms of Zehir (like 6-9ish level char and lets you create your own party)

My old roommate liked a game called The Witcher (iirc). I think it was based on a novel trilogy. You play a solo character, I think, and I think it mixes some fantasy with some tech.

Was NWN a party based game? If it is, I agree, all those old Black Isle Studios games (Baldur's Gate I & II, Icewind Dale, and Planescape:Torment) were awesome, even if they are now ancient.

so i know that with the original NWN, the expansions gave access to new spells and new character classes, that would allow for an expansion in capabilities and combinations... Is this the same in NWN 2? if i bought NWN2 and only the mask of the betrayer expansion would i be getting everything i need? or would i be missing out in some essential pieces with missing the storms of Zehir?

Im pretty much sold on NWN 2 for the moment lol gonna keep doing some research though :)

In NWN2 is there the same type of multiplayer / online abilities? i for some reason hate regular single player game play, but really like online where there are various different modules and items and what not...

    Thanks again everyone

EDIT*** Will my laptop (the pc in my signature be able to run NWN2 and expansions without any problems?)

IMO, Mask of the Betrayer is really needed since it allows you to get epic levels and adds some pretty sweet epic classes and feats. The campaign in that expansion is also extremely well done, definately better than the campaign in the original game, I think.

Storms of Zehir doesn't add too much, IMO. It just adds Swashbuckler and Hellfire Warlock epic class, both of which is pretty useless. New feats aren't that great either so I'd only recommend buying it if you want to play through the campaign.

And yes, NWN2 does offer multiplayer and it'll run fine. My 4 year old Pentium 4 desktop is still doing pretty well with the game

Well....the game is kinda old. I'd check amazon and they would probably have a gold edition of the game or something like that which includes at least both the OC and MotB

Just a word of warning: I played NWN like an addict, for at least a year every single day (all the expansions and custom mods), so I was really anxious about NWN2, but when it came out... well, I was disappointed. It's in many ways worse than the first part, especially the storyline. Similarly, I was extremely impressed with KOTOR, and then disappointed with KOTOR2. It might have something to do with a different developer (Obsidian) doing the sequels, in both of them (NWN2 & KOTOR2) the storyline is rather shallow and not nearly as good as in the first parts.

If I could recommend something, I'd go for Fallout 1&2 and Planescape:Torment. They're rather old, but patches are availible online to make them work with high resolutions (widescreen too). As for Dungeon Siege or Diablo or Oblivion or any other hack'n'slash, it's a different kind of a game, really. NWN wasn't a hack'n'slash, it was all about the DnD mechanics.

Oh, and one other thing: NWN2 was extremely demanding hardware-wise: I played it on my dekstop and it only got smooth after I upgraded to HD3850. If you're going to play it on the VAIO from your sig, I think it might not handle it at 1600x900.

    OC = original campaign

I think Amazon only mails games and don't do digital distribution of any kind.

And as for macieksw's post, while NWN2 didn't really revolutionize things as greatly as NWN, most people actually agree that NWN2's campaign is better than NWN. The expansions for NWN, however, have campaigns that are better than MotB or SoZ (IMO).

so im pretty much decided that i will be getting this game + expansion :)

Just need to find somewhere that sells it, i dont think amazon ships to canada and not a big fan of the shipping thing lol

i had a build in NWN that i LOVED, will that build still work as well in NWN 2 or do the new stuff in NWN2 make some of the characters not as effective ?

Well in NWN2, archery is broken and basically worthless.

Also, some prestige classes are capped to certain levels in NWN2 while they weren't in NWN. Assassin comes to mind. It is capped to 10 levels which makes the DC of death strike laughably low.
