Funny thing, on my home computer, I get around 20 fps on source at lowest resolution/settings, and it ranges from 20-40 about. On my laptop, I have a horrible graphics card and I get 5-10fps in game... But when I'm spectating and I go outside the map where all you can see is black, my pc gets 40fps, but my laptop gets 300!? Why is this? Is it because my procecssor on my laptop owns my pc cpu?

    Specs:
    Laptop
    1.8 centrino duo
    1 gig o ram
    intel 945gm chipset

    PC
    1ghz athlon
    768mb of ram
    ati radeon 9200SE

    thanks

Thats because there is almost no Code written for "out of map" spectator viewing. So your Texture mapping units dont have to process any 3D shapes, and because its all black, the Texture Mapping Units dont have to apply any textures on to 3D objects in game.

So essentially your Graphics Card is doing no work at all, and so your FPS jumps to 40. While your in game, hundreds, if not thousands of 3D vertexes need to be modified and many textures need to be applied such as lighting, and with all that work being done with a rubbish GPU, a system cannot cope, and you only low FPS rates.

Your laptop has got 1Gb or RAM and a Dual Core CPU, that's the thing thats making the difference, when the GPU is not doing a lot, displaying the same image each frame.

Your PC doesn't even meet the minimum requirements for Source games, actually, which is causing the crap performance. The ram and 9200SE are hardly desirable but perfectly acceptable for Source games, the 1Ghz cpu not so great...

you could try running it in dx 7 mode... but the reason you get more on your laptop is that its a duo and your desktop is not... as well as the fact that your desk top doesnt even meet the minimum in cpu it has to be a 1.2 or 1.4 i believe and you need at least 512 mb of ram dedicated to just the game and then a 64 mb video card (dedicated) but if you get a non dedicated card it would need more ram to play at a decent fps rating... but bassically any intel chip set graphics card wont get to muh over 10-20 fps when you are really playing... my friend has a gma 900 and 1.8 ghz laptop and with every thing turned to low and dx 7 mode on and 640x480 he only gets 10 - 15 doing nothing but looking at a wall and about 5 while shooting his glock. i believe he also has like a gig of ram

You might be able to play the default garry's mod map, gm_construct, very well but other garrysmod maps will run like rubbish. Same way with my desktop integrated card.

I've learned long ago that playing games with hardware below minimum recommended specs is like hitting yourself in the head with a police baton. They both give you migraines long after you try it.
