as far as future proofing goes how many years would the 8600m gt go compared to the 9600m gt

as far as 2-3 years down the road would the 8600m gt suffice?

It does make a difference if you have an 8600m GT with GDDR2 or GDDR3 because the GDDR3 model is quite a bit better than the GDDR2 model and has nearly the same performance as the 9600m GT. 2 - 3 years down the road, it will make no difference if you have an 8600m GT or a 9600m GT, they will both be quite obsolete by then (just like everything else in technology). The 8600m might not last that long as in terms of the graphics defect everyone is talking about but if you have a warranty you have nothing to worry about.

i am just wondering in terms of if i would buy another lappy. i would want to buy the gfx card that would last me as long as future proofing 2-3 years down the road. unless all gfx cards today will be obsolete..even the 8800gtx

Two years is really the longest you can expect from a GPU to allow you to play games with quite a bit of eye candy on. Additionally, newer technologies are implemented into the GPU's like new shader models.

The 8800 GTX at this point would be your best bet, mainly because it is the most powerful notebook GPU (aside from SLI) and was just recently released. You never know what new technology will bring, unfortunately.

That being said, I don't see any reason why an 8600m GT wouldn't allow most games to play with a reasonable detail level for the coming year. Beyond that, I'd say you should be happy if a new game plays well.
