No ddr3 kills ddr2. Memory is just a marketing gimmick, graphics card does not solely depend on memory. a 128mb gddr3 is probably a lot faster than a 512mb gddr2 card.

    You won't be able to afford a GDDR3 8600 GT for 7-800$ :(

Assuming your from the UK you can get a Dell M1530 for about £730-£900 with the 8600mGT DDR 3 256mb. (depending on CPU, hardrive and screen choices).

Becomes even cheaper with a coupon.

Also be carefull when buying a 8600M GT laptop . If you will see that it has 512Mb of GDDR it doesnt mean it has 512 Mb of DEDICATED Vram . Sometime resellers/ vendors write down that number already considering the 256MB that you can get via using the TurboCache feature .

Thus make sure you ask your vendor b4 you buy a laptop . And imo the most affordable PCs with the GDDR3 ram are Asus . Try looking those up .

DELL is somewhat expensive but if you will find some coupons you might get a great discount by up to 600$ from a new laptop ( XPS 1530 with 8600M GT 256DDR3 in this case ) .

UK coupons are less frequent than the US Dell ones so I say go for it.

Oh awesome, then yeah the XPS 1530 is very good; it's not like Dell's crappy consumer line. Customize it how you like and add the coupons for even more savings

People are always so concerned about DDR2 vs GDDR3. Don't worry. You might gain an FPS or two in gaming with it. Otherwise they're the same GPU. Plus DDR2 overclocks fine.

In other words the minor speed improvement isn't nearly worth the premium to pay for it. If it were $50 or less for a GDDR3 configured laptop vs DDR2 then I would consider it.

dell only do the 8600m in gddr3 if i was to go for the one down it would ne a 8400m wich still has gddr3 but 128 and im unsure of what the performance is like on these, its £70-£80 less but is it rly not as good?

8400m is no comparison with the 8600m. Extreme overclocked 8400m's have come close to stock 8600m GT DDR2 performance.

i dont plan to overclock so i should probably got for a 8600. does anyone know if dell have a VAT receipt when you purchace because all i say was the vat exempt option and im not sure if thats the same as claiming back your vat.

Well, I read that there is 15-20% difference in performance, but I don't own one so I dunno

if a game runs at 30 fps and the gddr 3 provides a 20 percent improvement then u gain an extra 6 fps not one or two

the only difference is that the ddr2 version is clocked at like 400mhz whereas the gddr3 version is clocked at 700mhz. With overclocking you might be able to increase the ddr2 to 500mhz or more, and the gddr3 model to about 900mhz. (I can run 880mhz on mine)

That means something on the order of a 60-75% increase in memory bandwidth, which translates to a lesser performance increase of probably 20+% depending on the situation.
