What game are you playing or planning to play on it? Overclocking an old 9600 with the hopes of being able to play Crysis is pointless. You might see an increase in performance on old games, but if you can only play CoD4 on everything low at 640x480, overclocking that 9600 isn't going to improve anything.

out of curiosity how do u overclock a graphics card. do u need to mess about with the hardware.
am sure alienware laptops allow for graphic card upgrades. -
Want to know how to overclock a video card? For all your OC'ing needs

With a 9600 it is more than likely most cost/time effective to save up for a new computer. (its probably not worth bothering to waste your time to overclock/monitor)
-
lol ATI 9600 & Geforce 9600
Decades apart -
Your card is DEFINITELY NOT WORTH overclocking, in short
-
You should try overclocking yourself...and get a new laptop
I also had an Radeon 9200 powered laptop... sold it off & bought this new one about a year back. -
I have a Radeon 9600se... defiantly not worth overclocking. Just play pre-2004 games and don't worry about it.
Or you could replace your comp.

As mentioned before it won't do miracles, but if it's a desktop R9600Pro it will do a significant job in boosting min fps in some games.
My R9600Pro overclocked well beyond the R9600XT levels and ran cool and solid @ 535/350 for games giving it a considerable boost over the default 400/300. It would max out in 3Dmk stable at 570/370, but play any game for hours at lower speeds.
From experience, the OC made higher resolutions and settings possible and the threshold settings less jittery and smoothing out tougher titles.
On laptops it's iffy as to what is helpful. As small an OC as it is for the X700 going from 350/350 to 400/400 made a noticeable difference in fluidity for Oblivion.
IMO if it's a mobile part the OC will be small you will still be at the same settings but a little smoother, especially if you can OC the memory by more than 10%.
For the desktop the R9600 core is very overclockable, but if it's an XT the memory was often slower modules than the Pro and the core had less headroom from stock and low-K only added a few mhz from the previous R9600 core.
It always worth it if done properly, as it's free performance gain, but be careful and make sure you know what you're doing first before doign anything. It can shorten the lifespan of a product, but at this point in time I don't think you're planning on keeping it for another 2-3 years.
is my graphics card worth over clocking?
