im planning to buy hp dv 9000t with 2gigRAM and T5200 processor..i would want to have go 7900 in that laptop.however, due to budget constraints go 7600 would be fine as of the moment (7900 is not offered anyway)...supposing next quarter (if i have the budget)i will change the go7600 to go7900 (or higher), is it possible? I mean can the go7900 fit in the dv9000t housing? Im just wondering coz hp dont offer a go7900 upgrade option.I thought go 7900 is not compatible with the dv9000t..pls enlighten me..tenks much to all you helpful computer wizards!!

If the laptop doesn't offer the 7900 as a choice, you will not be able to upgrade. If you are looking for a 17 inch laptop with the 7900, check out the e1705. Usually you can upgrade only to the maximum card within a model line, and only if you have a dedicated card to begin with.

Check this thread for more information.

If you want to upgrade your laptops video card someday,

You have chosen the right model.

More people have upgraded the video card for that model of laptop than any other.

If you want to buy and upgrade your laptops gpu someday, get a dell e1705 end of story.

You COULD upgrade a dell 15" laptop to my understand with a 7900gs, but they don't exactly suggest that :p

    No you cant.

unless you mean the dell m70.

And no you cant although it will fit because it needs the bios update from the xps m170

the last card was the 7800 gtx.

the reason the e1705 is the most gpu upgradeable laptop is you can use the bios from the xps 1710, thats what you need for the 7900 and above.

You can upgrade the GPUs in the e1705 with any of the currently available GPUs offered with the e1705. So if you bought the weakest dedicated GPU today, you would be able to swap it out with the go 7900 GS but nothing higher than that.

You wouldn't want to upgrade until a ways down the line, when much more powerful GPUs are available. Chances are by then you'll want to replace your whole system as the rest of the hardware will be showing its age by then. And the current GPUs of that time will not be compatible with the power and cooling system in the e1705.

The short answer is no, you cannot upgrade notebook GPUs.

Read through the GPU guide for more information.
