you should probably ask these questions before buying a laptop.
It's not the best, but will definitely be able to provide enjoyable gaming. It can't play crysis at high settings... -
pretty decent laptop
will be able to play WoW at highest
you should research before you buy though....how much did you pay for it?
if you paid 700-800 dollars
I would say prety good deal for the price -
well, i mean im not completely stupid in the area of computers, and it seemed a great buy especially for $700, so i decided to go ahead and get it. i searched for hours though.
ive been checking system requirements for the games i want to play, and ive noticed i pass everything with flying colors, except for the CPU parts, im borderline. i heard that this system can overclock the cpu 15% with no problems, which brings the speed up to 2.3 ghz. crysis reccomends 2.2 ghz.
how would i overclock the cpu? thats a little beyond what ive done before. -
I don't know how to overclock because my asus has a built in overclock button 2.5 ghz to 2.7, but I'm pretty sure there are some guides on these forums
I found a gpu overclock but not a cpu overclock guide here
lol sry I didn't mean to judge you btw, just the way you worded the title kinda set me off -
ok, well for increased performance, what do you suggest i do? i mean, in terms of getting the laptop, do i just leave it like it is and play games, or are there ways to increase performance like overclocking different things or what?
lol its np, did make me sound kind of like a noob :/ was just wanting some information -

The 9600m gt is a good overclocker.
MSI laptops are also capable of OC the cpu (either through a "turbo button" on certain models or through setfsb program). -
would you advise overclocking both the cpu and the vid card? what reppurcussions can this have on my system?
-
Download the latest and greatest gpu drivers lol. I can't stress this enough. When I got my asus g50vt a1 I had stock drivers for 6 months before I decided to update and the improvement in gameply/fps/graphics was insane.
I'm not sure what else you can do....you could try to overclock the gpu...but also be careful here because I don't know the risks of doing this
but before you do any of this run the games on the laptop as it is and see how the laptop fairs, might turn out that you don't need to overclock the computer at all. -
ok, so when i get it, delete the BS side games and google crap im sure it comes with, then go download the latest drivers for the NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT. install my games, see how they do before i OC anything? btw, are there programs that tell me how much memory my system and card are using? and my FPS rate?
-
I wouldn't OC anything until you try the games like you said. You might also wanna search youtube for your laptop and see videos about it -

Just go to the MSI forums on this site.

ok ill see if theres anything on youtube about it. and ill check the msi forums. ty both for all the help!

Unless you didn't know about this site until after you purchased that laptop, I don't understand why you didn't come here and ask before buying. You will find that the GPU in that laptop will have you turning down settings in many games to be able to play smoothly, especially any recent games.
You are already talking about overclocking the GPU and you haven't even got it yet!
If that won't bother you then there isn't anything to worry about.
For a little more, you could have got a better GPU and a more pleasurable gaming experience that has more potential i.e in future games. -
hmmm.....personally If I were you I would send that laptop back and build an awesome desktop(you could easily build a really good gaming desktop computer for 700 bucks)
If you want a gaming laptop that can handle some of the newer games pretty well, I'm sry to say but your looking at 1000+ dollars -
To be honest, what I'd do, if you have the patience and are tech saavy enough I would format and reinstall. But before you do, I would do the following:
(1) Create your backup DVD's of your system restore unless your laptop came with one. This way you can delete the system restore partition and free up some hard drive space.
(2) download a key extractor and get the key from your Vista installation, the one on the sticker on the bottom of your laptop typically won't work for a regular Vista install, only your OEM one.
(3) download all the latest drivers for your laptop, or use the CD provided, if any.
(4) boot from a regular vista dvd if you can get one (32-bit), and use it to delete all partitions, and create your new partition for Vista.
(5) Install vista and then all drivers.
This should give you a pretty clean setup. But if you're not comfortable with any of this I would let someone else do it, or just live with the crapware that came with the system. I don't know much about MSI, they are a reputable company, but every company puts a lot of crap on their systems these days to cut costs. -

this laptop is on for $850 at bestbuy right now and has the 9800m GS, which will be able to run all games at mostly higher settings. Isay return it and spend the extra $$ to get something easily 2 to 3 times better. -
Guys, don't be critical. He bought the laptop and is asking for opinions and help, regardless of before or after the sale. No need to scare people away.

the 9600m gt doesn't suck.... Not everyone needs to run at max to enjoy their games.
-
well, i mean, i need a laptop because im in the Air Force, and im going to need to do school work on it, as well as world of warcraft / call of duty.
as long as i can play atleast one of those games on decently high settings, i think ill be content for a little while. no doubt about it though, in about a year or two when i get stationed permenantly, ill be dumping atleast $3000 into a custom desktop, maybe a laptop depending on what im doing.
from what ive read on this system, there are really no amd cpu's that are better than the one already in it atm, and when they do come out with the next series, it will have a different port... so incompatable with the motherboard i suppose.
the system has good specs, but the cpu seems it will hold it back, if thats not upgradeable, then if it gets to be a pain in the butt to run what i want it to run, ill build that new system i reffered to earlier. its going to run me $1,917, shipped to me in 3 days. its really a kick little computer. -

Man I wish I would saw this thread earlier because I own an MSI 1039 and they are crap cosmetic wise. The hinge on the screen cracked on my after a year and their disk drives will popped out on the littlest bump. Stuff on the inside is ok but I will never buy another MSI again.
-
you will be able to run all games you want. i guarentee it. your graphics card is better than mine and i run most games on highest or at least high, (games like mass effect, half life 2, the witcher, orange box, oblivion, bioshock, assassins creed, cod4) the only really difficult one for my laptop to play is crysis, and that runs on medium (and it still looks great, plus you can tweak it). if you play alot of RTS' you might have some trouble (not exactly sure with the exact cpu) but the CPU generally doesnt cause much problems in games.
unless you expect 60+ fps on highest on all games you will be happy with your purchase.
just ordered a laptop from MSI, is it any good?
