ok im not sure if im posting this in correct section if it is in the wronge 1 im sorry

ok i brought a new gfx card ( geforce go 6800 ) and put it in my laptop today. since i have installed it thou my lappy keeps shutting itself down i think from the look of it the problem is that the cpu os overheating i have put the thermal paste on the cpu infact i did it 3 seperate times with differing amounts each time. but this problem is still carrying on can anyone tell me if they have came across this before or if they know of a way to fix it. the thermal paste i put on was just normal paste from matlins and works upto temps of 170 i am not sure if laptop have to have diff paste or higher temp rating

any help would be great thx sut

Paste isn't what is used on graphics cards, but rather thermal pads. They are slightly thicker, so they can bridge the gap between the aluminium/copper and the core and memory. If you have used paste, then that is the problem. If you have used thermal pads, then see what temperature the notebook runs at, if that is possible. Try install a program like Everest and have a look at the temperature.

You might want to take a look at the cooling guide.

May I ask which notebook you are refering to? If the cooling on the graphics card and processor is connected together, and you had to remove the whole system, then the processer probably is the problem. Did you use new paste on the processer core? (sorry, if I ask some stupid questions)

Did you manage to measure the temperature of the processor and graphics core?

If your cpu has dynamic switching or speedstep try limiting it to the minimum speed for now until the problem is resolved, it should kick out less heat in that config. Then you could download Notebook Hardware Control and monitor your cpu temperatures. You could try a cooling pad or if you have a compatible cpu, undervolting it to reduce heat.

the laptop im using is the fujitsu siemens m3438g and yes the cpu and gfx card are connected with the heatsinkpipes and fan. but before i installed the new gfx card today and i never had a problem with overheating at all so it must be something i have done yes i used new paste but the paste that was on there was blue the new paste i put on is silver isshh i dont know if that makes any diff. jess paws to be honest what u say sounds great but i have no idea how to do what u are saying really sorrry ( cooling pad what is it and will it work better than the paste

    thanks sut

by the way when touch the heatsink above the cpu when the lappy shuts down it is red hot i dont know if that should be liek that or not

If the copper plate above the the processer, is very hot, then that suggests that heat is getting to the cooling system. That means that there is probably nothing wrong with the thermal interface. Thermal interface is a paste that is placed between the processer core (the centre of the processer) and the metal of the cooling system. This increases the heat transfer from the processor to the cooling, and it must be present.

Since there is a heatpipe on the cooling, you should check if the other end of the pipe gets hot. If it does, then the basic cooling is working. Then check if the fan comes on, or spins. I have a notebook that is almost the same as yours, in terms of cooling, and the fan comes on peroidically every 20 to 25 minutes. It first comes on strongly and fast, spinnng for about 7 seconds, and then returns to an inaudible level. Make sure that your notebook does this.

Have you managed to check the temperature of the processer and the graphics card?

havnt checked the cpu temp as am unable at the min but will sort that very soon but the gfx card is running at about 90 when playin black hawk down and can run hotter. i have felt the back of the heatsink on this and this only seems to be warm when i got the new gfx card i had to buy some new thermal pads but the ones i had to get was silver in colour and very thin but the ones that was on there was alot thinker and blue so i think this maybe the problem from what u are sayin do u know where to get these pads from if u think it maybe that to

Are you sure that the fan runs good? The reason I am asking is this: once a reviewer Ice Tea had upgraded his 6800Go to a X1800 Mobility but his problem was that the fan was not running anymore.

    Good luck.

    Charlie :)

ok i have run everest and the problem is deff the cpu i am sitting here watching the temp go up0 alomost as fast as i can count it. i have an idle temp on the gpu of a constant 80 oc i dont know if this is running hot or not but it stays stable at that temp. the cpu starts at around 45 oc but then just goes up faster and faster. i have a buttion on my laptop that when i press it seems to make the fan run faster if i press this then at idle the cpu will sit constant at around 47 oc

so if anyone can help that would be great thx sut

I would check the copper plate that is placed on top of the processer. It needs to be securecly placed, and the a good thermal interface should be used. Something like Artic Silver. That is available from almost all good computers stores, and it is very effective.

The graphic shouldn't be running at 90 C, even when playing a game. It should around 70 to 75 C maximum. I am not too sure about where thicker pads are available, but they should sort that problem out.
