I will try that, thanks. It's something I didn't think of - Source-based games in the past were never shader-heavy. The 8600M-GT/9600M-GT have only 32 shader units so it makes sense that gives a big performance boost, especially at higher resolutions.

Do you guys think that there will be an increased difficulty setting?
With a well-organised team, expert difficulty can be too easy.
Though I'm sure the later levels will be much more difficult. -
If not by valve, then definately by the modding community. It won't be long until almost every server is running with an admin mod, and some will probebly have custom AI scripts, custom zombie skins, player skins, weapons, maps etc. I have no doubt about this at all, it WILL happen.
-
It will be interesting to have doppleganger zombies of your teammates... a lot of team damage will happen if you are confused.
LOL. -
I love mods.
How easy will it be to implement mods though? Because in COD4 it seems quite difficult (relatively) to play on modded servers. That is probably my only gripe with COD4. -
Someone already made it possible to play L4D on Dustbowl (TF2 Map).
-
Just tried to beat it on expert about 10 times with Chaz, Johnny T, and Gophn. So close, yet so far...

An update - Left 4 Dead is 100% playable, no choppiness on 1680x1050 with all high settings save for no AA and Medium shaders on a 9600M-GT 512MB DDR2.
Yeah - we put up some good effort but it was tough. Next time we'll do it.
-
To be honest, luck can play a big role.
When we beat it on expert, the AI director decided not to put a Tank in the game which made it that much easier.
Tanks are the biggest challenge you will face. My advice is to stay FAR away from the guy (only engage from long range) and try to set him on fire with the molotov. He will burn out eventually. -
this would be such an annoying server mod, lol. I don't know how many total weapons this game has, but id it would be awesome to have a gun game mod that works perfectly.
Anyways, I think this the most hours Ive ever put into any demo. The people who say that it may get repetitive may be right, but many games do too, or they aren't even that fun to go through the campaign (cough halo 3). As long as the director comes up with creative situations (I already have a few funny stories just from the demo alone), then I'll be happy with the amount of possible fun I'll have. What I'm worried about is that in the actual game, there won't be a big enough variety of enemies. I'd like at least double of what was in the demo. -
My group was just attacked by 3 tanks at once lol...
I thought the max was 1/level? -
That was probebly just the server host messing with you guys. I've done this to some people before who were in my dedicated server
(spawned 20 or so witches in a room before they got to it) Only problem is that even for the server host to do it, sv_cheats has to be enabled and it'll give a message in chat, but that's why you do it before anyone joins so they won't know.
-
It was usually a Tank (expert mode) that took out our team.... our low health didnt help either.. LOL.
Good times.
-
I played a little bit of the demo and I liked it, but I wouldn't pay the $40 some dollars to buy the game.
-
That is definitely the case. Under normal circumstances, after tons of Expert completions, I've never seen multiple tanks.
-
Tanks are insane!!
Just hearing that "Tank intro" music drives me nuts. When I hear it, I quickly type into the chatbox "Everyone RUN DAMMIT".
The Tank is insanely fast but you can actually outrun him, because he always stops to pick up an object every once in a while. You can take advantage of this in order to always keep him at a distance. Molotovs seem almost necessary in Expert mode. -
We yell.... split up!!!
then we follow it as it chases after one of us... which would be the bait for us to attack it. -
I am such a sissy for a big guy when it comes to these *scare the sh** out of you* games, and I found playing the single player with the computer AI to be.....well....scary.
But when I realized you can play online in campaign with 4 player co-op....I JUST might go out and buy it. I seem to enjoy myself, and feel more confident while playing with other people.
Least this way, I don't have to make a quick pant's-change when I get in a safe room. -

Make sure you join the Steam NBR group, you can get online with some of us in the same lobby. Gophn, Johnny T, Patrick, and I had a great time last night even though we didn't quite go all the way. -
So were so close yet so far...
The lag also made for some interesting team kills. -
there's nothing wrong with replaying the same levels over and over (ive spent more time playing dust2 than all other video games put together), but this game is no counter-strike and has nowhere near the same replayability value and is IMO vastly overpriced
-
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
i feel the opposite, i always felt that counter strike was good but it felt repetitive all the time, you weren't doing anything different it was the same thing over and over so i cant see how this has nowhere near the same replayability value when essentially counter strike is that same exact thing.
-
it got a 9 from ign i thought it was going to get a 8 or somewhere around there. time to go buy this game
-
I get bored with counterstrike. I can only play it so much. I quit on and off. The real reason I pick it back up is the amount of people always on.

i cant believe people still trust professional reviewers
you want an honest review go read gamespot or ign user reviews rated below 7 for any game; they give a much more unbiased picture -
=/ I can't play with you guys for a while, we had a massive power outage on Sunday night and for some reason ever since then my gpu and psu have been screeching every time I do anything 3d intensive.
-
are you serious? I miss back in the day where people actually PLAYED games before saying, they want to get them rather than just depending on reviews. I did that with most the n64, ps2 games I had and it worked out almost all of the time. So therefore, you're being stupid to depend on a score to determine whether or not you're going to buy a game (sorry that I'm being blunt). If you end up not liking game, that's on you.
-
The game is out in 4 hours and 40 minutes! Anyone want to join me playing the game right when it's unlocked?
I'm unknown555525 on steam, and my current alias on there is -UnKn- SLaYeR. -
i played the game already so don't yell at me
. and i would AGREE with the score. and you have no god**** right to call me stupid.the n64, i was playing games before that
-
2 hours guys.....
(warbkwnlwnfwfkln) -
Just killed 4 Tanks on multiple Expert runs. It's not too hard when you have a molotov.
-
I depend on reviews a lot! Both professional and user reviews! If I never read reviews I probably would have ended up buying games like Hellgate: London, Farcry 2, Red Alert 3, etc. and missing out on The Witcher, World of Goo, etc...

L4D is now UNLOCKED

i have it preloaded but it says i need to purchase the game are you f*****ing kidding me right now
-
i want to buy it but i cant afford it right now. i think its lame that they locked the demo also.
-
Versus mod is frikkin AMAZING!!!!!
-
I hate you....getting the game later this week.
-
ahh that was fun! We just beat the Mercy campagne, got all the way to the end on expert, but couldn't beat the 2nd tank on the rooftop. After dying 30+ times on the roof, and spending about 2 hours just on the roof of the hospitol we decided to get it over with and changed it to easy.
On the end credits it said we played for 6 hours, killed 7860 zombies, I had 33% accuracy(the best there
), and I myself died 106 times
Btw, does anyone have a good strategy for the end rooftop part of that campagne on expert? We tried just about everything, but if it wasn't a smoker, hunter, and boomer all incapacitating people at the same time, it was the nearly impossible to kill tanks.
Also, I haven't tried versus mode yet, but everyone who joined my match kept saying how amazing it was, so I think I'll give that a try now.., there were 2 people who actually joined the match, just to say versus mode is awsome, then left.. -
I so hate you right now. Joined the NBR group the other day, and seen you playing a while ago. Everyone who was on was playing it, LOL.
And me, sitting here.....bought Fallout 3 few days ago....broke....and wishing I had $50 for L4D.
That makes me a sad panda. -
Someone needs to be bait and make the tank run in front of the chaingun.
-
I'm just wondering if anyone can confirm that you will only get the achivements 'No-One Left Behind' and *Survive blahblah campaign* if you don't die at all during the campaign.
I played with 2 random people today, and me and someone else were killed. The other guy + the AI survived. He got to the safe house and we all resurrected. Later on when we were rescued by the helicopter on the No Mercy campaign, he was the only one to get the achivements 'No-One Left Behind' and 'Mercy Killer'.
Mercy Killer: Beat the No Mercy Campaign
No-One Left Behind: Beat a campaign with all 4 Survivors. -
I got the mercy killer achievement, but none of us got the No-One left behind one. Probebly because while running to the chopper I got a huge piece of concrete chucked at me, then 30 zombies ripping me apart... and they all got away though
ahh good times..
-
So here I am... staring at the L4D preload... and my copy is somewhere in illinois. This is so depressing
