I put this into gaming because I believe it has to do with graphics card driver.
If I use any of the modded drivers from www.laptop2go.com they work fine except for when I close the laptop lid the screen still stays on. this is annoying because the laptop is on a desk besides me when I sleep.
When I use the Dell driver games play like crap but when I close the lid it does what its supposed to and the screen turns off.
Is there a Nvidia control panel setting or registry key that I can change to fix this so the screen will still turn off with one of the other drivers?
system is :
dell 1720
xp home 32 bit
core 2 duo t5550 @ 1.8ghz
3Gb DDR2 RAM
8600M GT 256mb DDR2

Not sure if the 1720 has this, but some laptops have a fn button for switching the screen off.
-
I have dimming, and a sleep button, and some other minor functions like calculator that I can do with the Fn key but really I just want the monitor off when I shut the laptop.
I dont mean i want the computer to go into standby I just mean the monitor switched off when lid closed and monitor on when lid is open. -
Well, if you have vista (I'm sure there's a similar method in 7 and in XP) you can modify the power plan settings so that the screen turns off after a shorter interval of no activity (say, 1 minute) while leaving the computer on. My m1530 had a little magnet in the bezzel over the screen next to the webcam that fell out when I was messing around with the internals, and since then it hasn't seemed to recognize that the lid is closed, so maybe something similar happened to your laptop?

Theres a tool called "turn off lcd" which you can find really easily, just google it. Try using it, its an exe file which turns off your lcd.
Other than that, i don't know lol. -
Yeah the default is that when you close the lid the computer will go into standby but Ive disabled that because I like it to go into standby after say 20 mins of inactivity.
With the Dell nvidia driver the screen turns off when lid is closed regardless of windows power settings
with any of the laptop2go nvidia drivers the screen will not turn off when lid is closed
The laptop definitley still has knows when its closed or not because If I change the windows power settings to go to standby when I close the lid it still goes into standby but I dont wan't standby lol I just want the monitor off.
Basically I want to use the updated laptop2go drivers but also have the functionality of the screen turning off when I close the lid.
Sorry to be such a pain in the lol. -
anybody? There must be some registry change I can perform to achieve what I want to do? If the dell drivers can do it surely the laptop2go drivers can be modified to do the same thing.
-
Dont count on it being that easy. All the laptops ive had with xp had some real backlight switch which was pressed down when monitor was closed, because apparently XP just cant have a damn easy way to turn off the screen.
I suggest you somehow switch to Win7, for the greater good. Things like this is simply not an issue in Vista/7 -
Workaround solution, but you could always just not close the lid and set Windows to turn off the screen after a minute of inactivity, etc.
-
How do you know the screen is on when the lid is closed? Sounds like a "does the fridge light really switch off?" kinda story
-
my screen turns on when in sleep mode when i move my mouse.
to fix this you have to go to your device properties and turn off ;allow device to turn on computer'.
it may be whats causing your screen to turn on... -
-
The light is actually more annoying than it looks when the room is dark lol and plus I didn't just want the screen to be on 24/7.
allgood I'll just do a workaround.
LoL thanks for trying to help everyone. I know its not a big issue but I thought there might be a simple solution either in windows power settings, nvdia control panel, or in the registry somewhere. -
Aahaaaa....i see
lol

heres a picture of where you can set the mouse not to wake up the computer:

oh ok i never knew xp had a sleep mode.
anyways when i was using vista and laptopvideo2go drivers on my 8600m gs there were many post on modded drivers causing a wake-up during sleep. just choose another driver. i know i stuck with 169.xx drivers for my 8600 for the longest time -
I am using the 196.21 WHQL and 196.34non WHQL.
also have tried with 180.84 drivers and same problem.
I'll try the 169.xx like you said!
lid closed but screen still on problem
