You could always try Guild Wars. That got me a hooked for a while but not as long as WoW. For FPS, I would go with Shadowrun.

Sounds like you're looking for something like Guild Was, like suggested above.

I've got all the released Guild Wars games, they are great in that you can solo or group play at your pleasure, and it runs on just about anything while scaling really well to people with nicer systems. It's also nice because you don't have to feel guilty when you want to take a break since you aren't locked into any pay-to-play things. Great community and instanced gaming means no farmers stealing your fun.

CS:Source is OK if you don't mind dieing every 20 seconds and then sitting for 1-3 minutes while the last two people scout the map looking for each other.

Battlefield series is great if you like more interactive game play and longer rounds.

Ryzom is pretty cool if you have lot's of time available and want one of the best online communities going.

Anarchy Online is really cool if you want one of the most customized characters you can get in a game, some places hurt from farmers, and the free accounts have kinda ruined the public area's of the game that the free accounts have access to. Still a great game though.

Crysis and Quake Wars is just 2-3 months away and look great, but I wouldn't waste time with Huxley. Outside of the eye candy, from what I know of people that have played it, it's already been infected with the Asian farmers that have ruined just about every other massive online game.

Most FPS games are usually fast-paced, and if you are like me who can't win a FPS against the computer on easy, then they're not for you. I'd go with Guild Wars.

Planetside! Its getting pretty long in the tooth, but its the best MMOFPS out there. Ok, its really the ONLY one out there.

Eve Online is ok, but its a total Sci-Fi, nothing like WOW.

I played Neocron for years, and it's still alive and kicking if you want an FPS MMO hybrid.

I've played Guild Wars since a little bit after its release. You should enjoy it as it is far more casual when it comes to the PvE and has free online play so you aren't really wasting money by not playing all the time.

However, the PvP is made of fail nowadays due to ArenaNet being terrible for turning the game into "Build" Wars. You might actually like it because it is more "accessible," I guess... :(

On the horizon, you may want to look at Warhammer Online which will be coming out Q1 2008.

Have fun with whatever game you choose! ;)

I'm playing GW and actually going off to play it now. I'd really siggest it, atleast read up on it and then deciede whether it's for you or not. Also the games very balanced so it's more enjoyable for non grinders.

Only thing I hate about Guild Wars is it's mainly a PvP game. Would be really cool if they made a raiding type system like WoW has. Their sales would go really high.

Whats wrong with the story driven missions? Depending on which expansion's land you are in, and which ones you own, these can be really cool and vary alot. There are also loads of typical "filler" quests along the way.

I actually think the story for GW is the best of all MMO's I've played so far.

Nothing is wrong with it but I am just saying that it would be fun to play it for a purpose. Not only the story but you requiring "gear" to progress through the story. I mean in WoW, there was a lore behind each instance as well and some of the Burning Crusade dungeons we're sequels to the 1st game. It's like a totally different story with each expansion pack for Guild Wars.
