    Hi,

I'm looking for an RTS to tide me over until SC2 is released. I'm considering the World In Conflict, along with the expansion pack on steam for $19.99. Before I make the purchase, I'd like to know if there are still people playing the game online (long wait times?), and if so, is it "new player friendly" (good matchmaking, etc).

I'm pretty much only interested in the multiplayer aspect of RTS, btw.

Other suggestions for RTS games will also be helpful. Thank you for your time!

You can try out Supreme Commander or Warhammer 40,000. I'm not sure about the multiplayer aspect for those games but I enjoy the single player aspect of the games.

Also Dawn of War 1 is a very good game, there should be an edition that combines all the expansion packs. (Version 2 is a different form of RTS)

Universe at War was fun. Not the best game out there, but fun.

I'd recommend any of the Command and Conquer titles, including Generals and Red Alert

Company of Heroes still has a good amount of players online. Go for Tales of Valor since you said you don't care about single player. You'll get access to the various game modes and the alternate units.

or you could try Warcraft: 3... if you ever get bored playing the normal game, theres tons of "Custom Maps" with different playstyles... Like DoTA for example...

Yes, Dawn of War : Soulstorm is a great game, the bonus of 9 races is a lot of variety, its not just 9 races with different skins, they are each unique and have a certain playing style.

Dawn of War II is better IMO, it is slower and smaller scale but it uses the Company of Heroes engine, so cover is utilized and terrain is completely destructible.

Company of Heroes OWNS, I mean jsut DOMINATES every other RTS out there. Look at X-fire: its popularity is still great, last I checked its ranked 28, way ahead of Dawn of War I and II (newer game).

The gameplay is fantastic, don't be surprised if starcraft 2 seems like shallow child's-play after you really experience CoH. Firing arcs, combined arms, indirect fire, cover, building combat, accuracy, doctrine choices...a skilled player can dominate a massively larger, and higher teched force by using good tactics.

Seems like I'm getting a lot of votes for company of heroes and Dawn of War II. I might get the complete THQ pack for 99.99.

Can anyone comment on the match making for either games? As a new player, will I constantly be matched against veterans?

If you like Starcraft you will definitely like DoW 1. And the MP is very active. Dow 2 is crap imo. WiC and RE3 are good for MP too but I like DoW 1 best. And yes you will probably get pwned a lot unless you are already a well seasoned RTS player. Just play ther AI till you can beat it with your eyes closed. Then go online!

Coh is wicked so defo get it. The online match making is pretty good actually, usually get people fairly similarly matched. The single player is great fun too. Think I might get Dawn of War 2 soon.
