The Asus G1s and the C90s both have the DDR3 version of the 8600 GT... The Compal/Sager one only has a DDR2 one and IMO looks really ugly compared to the c90s or the G1s.

The Asus G1s uses a GDDR3 card. The Asus C90s can be outfitted with either a DDR2 or GDDR3 card. Macbook Pro's use GDDR3 cards.

for a 8700 in a computer for less than 2000 i think there's a version of the toshiba x205 that has the 8700 but you'll have to sacrifice cpu, native screen res, and the hd-dvd drive (probably doesn't matter to most people, though).

sorry for being so dumb, but im a still little bit confused between the c90 and G1

    1) by G1, you are reffering to the Asus G1s-A1? which always have ddr3?
2)i found an asus c90 barebone, customized it to how i like, with a ddr3 card. now, how does a ddr3 outperform a ddr2, as in how well does it outperform it?

    ok the x205 is 1499.99 from best buy that i mentioned it has a 1.66 C2D, 240gb hard drive, 2gb RAM, 1440x900 (17") screen, and the 8700.

yes the g1s-a1, g1s-b1, or g1s-x1 all have the DDR3 version and the DDR3 version will show a 10-15% increase in performance (10% of 60fps = 6fps), but with different games come different results. it also allows for a higher overclock but that's a different story.

    there's also another x205 version that comes with a 2ghz C2D, 240gb hard drive, 2gb ram, 1440x900 17" screen, and SLi'd 8600m GTs for 1999.99.

Or save some coin and get an 8600m GT DDR2 version and overclock. You can easily exceed 8600m GT DDR3 stock speed performance with overclock.

    1) Really it's referring to any version of the Asus G1s, all of which have GDDR3 video memory.
    2) Usually a GDDR3 card will outperform it's DDR2 counterpart (with the same core clocks) by around 25-30% on average.

Nope, you might be able to exceed it in 3dmark scores, but a DDR2 card can't OC to even stock memory speeds of the GDDR3 card (700mhz), so in any game with large textures or high resolution or AA, you won't be able to outperform the GDDR3 card. A core overclock cannot make up for a low memory clock.

    Hi,

    Joined the conversation quite late.
Firstly your query about a good 8600m GT laptop. Other than those sexy Macbook Pros from Apple Inc., ASUS is the only brand offering laptops with the GDDR3 8600m GT. I would highly recommend the G1s-A1 since it is more portable compared to the C90. It looks great and is good value for money since you get almost the same rig as a USD 2499 Macbook Pro.

As for Canadian resellers I found a list on the net which I am posting here. It's not mine, but I found it useful when looking for ASUS resellers myself. This is the Canadian part of that list. Hope you find it useful.

wow thanks for those sites fuergeist, highly appreciated :)
i know the c90 is a barebone notebook fully customizable to the way i would like, but what also matters to me is looks of the notebook as well, and im guessing the G1s wins in that =\
    any other opinions?

also, is it only the g1's that are equipped with the ddr3? what about the g2's?

G2S has 8600GT GDDR3 but it's a 17" model. If you're going for that kind of size nothing less than an 8700GT or SLI configuration will be worthwhile since those are the best cards from Nvidia for that size screen. 8600GT GDDR3 is just about the absolute best model for 15".
