is this typical? I did a clean installation of Vista Ultimate and installed the latest drivers for my go7600 from laptopvideo2go and have lost some performance. Is this purely down to the driver?

Yes.. but what it really comes down to is performance drop in games. As of now, ATI is ahead of Nvidia when it comes to vista drivers, but expect better ones to come out later.
