basically, im looking for anyway to lower my ping while playing counterstrike source. My rates are all good, my drivers are the latest but for some reason when me and my friend (he has a dell inspiron 6400) are playing beside each other, his ping is always about 20 lower than mine. Any ideas on why this might be? Im just kind of curious if anyone has any suggestions on how to lower my ping![]()
I have an "Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN" if that matters, and the rest of my specs are in my sig.
Im fairly new to counterstrike and gaming (when your ping actually matters, i have always played RTS games before) so this might seem like a silly question with no answer, but i thought id ask anyway![]()

what are you using to check your ping in CS:S? net_graph? you really shouldn't use counter strike as a ping check to compare your pings with anyone else's.
CS:S's ping readout is very innacurate, and can actually be modified to appear to yourself and other players as anything from 0 ping, to 999999 ping, when in actuality it's not. Check it in other NON source games like Unreal tournament if you really care about comparing ping rates.
Also, if your both on the same wireless router, you may want to consider that his pc may have higher priority on your wireless network because of his LAN ip assigned to his PC. Check the QoS on your router and find out if you see it as a problem. -
Windows Network Adapater settings can have something to do with it...so many variables.

i just used the cmd line "ping" command to get my ping from the server, it gave me about the same as counterstrike does. (~100)
and his ping is lower than mine when we are both at our own places (even though i have better internet and router, and im the only one using the internet), so i doubt its QoS -

better QOS = Better ping.

well i have a download speed of about 270kbps and his is about 170kbps, we have the same isp (but that shouldnt make a difference because if we play on the same router his ping is still better, so that rules out our internet speed. I think it has something to do with my laptop or settings or something), and my computer is better than his in every way i can think of
how do i get better QoS?
and what is "Windows Network Adapater settings"? -

I believe you need to focus on your ISP's network flow.
I was wondering the same thing when my cousin got a 20ms better ping than me in CS:S and we lived only 15miles apart. We also had the same ISP, Comcast 6Mbit.
I finally discoveredbanghead
that it comes down to your line. Some ISP's don't provide you with a dedicated line and thus you have to share it with neighbors. If they are downloading/uploading something vigorous, it's going to affect your connection. In my example, my cousin lives in an area where not many people can afford high-speed internet. I live in a very weathly community where pretty much everyone has cable or DSL.

I wouldn't worry about 20 ping difference. That's 20 milliseconds as in 0.02 seconds... Hardware, drivers, router, background software, etc can all contribute to a different ping. Depending on the game, running anything below 100ms is perfectly fine.

cmds for improving Game performance (may lower ping also)
Type these commands in Console (1 at a time):
Rate 25000
cl_updaterate 101 (For Lowering Lag)
sv_maxupdaterate 60
sv_maxunlag 1 (if u are playing at 100+ ping) OTHERWISE sv_maxunlag 0.5
maxupspeed 320
fps_max 101
Try these commands & let me know...
Type net_graph 3 in console for Displaying network stats & FPS ..
It accurate.. i compared it with Fraps & other FPS Programs -
Also Set 'dynamiccrosshair 0' .. .. Now when u Run/Walk the size of your Crosshair WONT change... It ll only increase when u shooting
-
nope, nothing but, my rates must not be as good as i thought they were because i have like 8 choke (that is probably the real culprit as to why my shots arent registering that great)
how do i fix choke if the server i play on doesnt allow me to change my rates? or is it even possible.. -
1. Run Css
2. Open Consol (~)
3. Put in Consol cl_cmdrate +25
4. Press enter and your done.
Sryy I didnt know 2006 dont make a joke lol -
and if the server dosent allow you to change rates you cant talk to admin in server about thath
-
ill try that, but isnt cl_cmdrate supposed to be set to the tic of the server?
-
if you want to have really low ping then you can mask it by typing "cl_cmdrate 1" in console, it will give you a ping of 5 in all servers regardless of how far away they are from you or how fast/slow your internet is; although some admins may tell you to unmask it.
